Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore the determinants of teachers’ continuance intention concerning cloud services.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a cloud service, namely, Google Sites, to support teacher collaboration and further develop a research model to explore the determinants of their continued usage intention.

Findings

The findings reveal that continued intention to use the cloud services is primarily determined by their attitude towards using it; attitude towards using is affected by perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness; and perceived ease of use is influenced by facilitating conditions, while perceived usefulness is influenced by social influence.

Practical implications

This study determines that teachers intend to continue using cloud services once training in using such services has been provided and if they hear favourable opinions from others.

Originality/value

The paper enables us to better understand factors affecting teachers' continuance intention toward cloud services.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate what factors can affect individuals’ knowledge sharing on social media from the perspectives of personality traits and social capital.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate what factors can affect individuals’ knowledge sharing on social media from the perspectives of personality traits and social capital.

Design/methodology/approach

A theoretical model was developed with reference to the personality traits theory and the social capital theory. Accordingly, a questionnaire was designed to collect the individuals’ ideas on knowledge sharing on social media and further test the model. The questionnaire was then distributed to two LINE groups. Finally, the collected data were analyzed using the partial least squares (PLS) approach.

Findings

Personality traits not only directly affect knowledge sharing, but also indirectly influence it via social capital. Of all personality traits, agreeableness, openness and extraversion directly and indirectly influence knowledge sharing.

Research limitations/implications

Knowledge sharing is undertaken by individuals and social groups. It starts with individuals and then diffuses to other members of a group.

Practical implications

Group managers have to identify the members who are friendly, open-minded or extroverted and encourage them to act as the bellwethers for knowledge sharing under an effective regulatory regime, through which intra-group knowledge sharing can be promoted.

Originality/value

This study introduces a new model to explore knowledge sharing on social media from individual and social perspectives. It illustrates what will affect individuals’ knowledge sharing on social media.

Purpose

Drawing upon work-home resources model, this study aims to investigate how and when humble leadership influences followers’ work–family enrichment. Specifically, this study focuses on the mediating role of thriving at work and moderating role of promotion focus.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 292 employees of science and technology enterprises in China through a three-wave questionnaire survey. Hierarchical regression analysis and bootstrapping approach were employed to test hypotheses.

Findings

This study found that thriving at work significantly mediated the relationship between humble leadership and work–family enrichment. Promotion focus strengthened the positive relationship between humble leadership and thriving at work and the indirect effect of humble leadership on work–family enrichment through thriving at work.

Practical implications

The findings of this study offer guidance for managers to enhance thriving at work and improve employees’ work–family experiences.

Originality/value

First, this study explores the work-to family spillover effects of humble leadership by examining the family outcomes of humble leadership. Second, this study further uncovers the underlying mechanism between humble leadership and work–family enrichment by demonstrating the mediating role of thriving at work. Third, by exploring the moderating role of promotion focus, this study provides insight into the boundary conditions of the impact of humble leadership.

Abstract

Purpose

Microribbon with meander type based on giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) effect has become a research hot spot due to their higher sensitivity and spatial resolution. The purpose of this paper is to further optimize the line spacing to improve the performance of meanders for sensor application.

Design/methodology/approach

The model of GMI effect of microribbon with meander type is established. The effect of line spacing (Ls) on GMI behavior in meanders is analyzed systematically.

Findings

Comparison of theory and experiment indicates that decreasing the line spacing increases the negative mutual inductance and a consequent increase in the GMI effect. The maximum value of the GMI ratio increases from 69% to 91.8% (simulation results) and 16.9% to 51.4% (experimental results) when the line spacing is reduced from 400 to 50 µm. The contribution of line spacing versus line width to the GMI ratio of microribbon with meander type was contrasted. This behavior of the GMI ratio is dominated by the overall negative contribution of the mutual inductance.

Originality/value

This paper explores the effect of line spacing on the GMI ratio of meander type by comparing the simulation results with the experimental results. The superior line spacing is found in the identical sensing area. The findings will contribute to the design of high-performance micropatterned ribbon with meander-type GMI sensors and the establishment of a ribbon-based magnetic-sensitive biosensing system.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore the seismic damage mechanism of the Dayemaling Bridge during the Maduo earthquake and discuss the seismic damage characteristics of the high-pier curved girder bridge.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the numerical simulation method is used to analyze the seismic response using synthetic near-field ground motion records.

Findings

The near-field ground motion of the Maduo earthquake has an obvious directional effect, it is more likely to cause bridge seismic damage. Considering the longitudinal slope of the bridge and adopting the continuous girder bridge form, the beam end displacement of the curved bridge can be effectively reduced, and the collision force of the block and the bending moment of the pier bottom are reduced, so the curved bridge with longitudinal slope is adopted.

Originality/value

Combined with the seismic damage phenomenon of bridges in real earthquakes, the seismic damage mechanism and vulnerability characteristics of high-pier curved girder bridges are discussed by the numerical simulation method, which provides technical support for the application of such bridges in high seismic intensity areas.

Abstract

Purpose

In order to explore the damage probability of bridge engineering in the event of earthquake in the construction stages, the analysis method of seismic vulnerability in the construction stages is proposed in this paper.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the joint simulation function of construction stage conditions and seismic response conditions of MIDAS/Civil finite element analysis software, combined with the method of IDA analysis and compared the relationship between demand and capacity.

Findings

The research shows that: (1) the average seismic loss in different construction stages varies greatly; (2) the seismic vulnerability varies greatly in different construction stages. The vulnerability of the bridge in stage 6 is determined by the longitudinal direction of bridge. Therefore, during the construction of the whole bridge, we should focus on strengthening the disaster and loss prevention strategy of earthquake insurance in the longitudinal direction of bridge. (3) The application of the secondary dead load mainly affects the fragilityin the longitudinal direction of bridge, but has little effect on the fragility in the transversal direction of bridge.

Originality/value

This paper is to explore the seismic vulnerability of a typical simply supported continuous bridge during the construction stages, and to trace the entire construction stage of a typical simply supported continuous bridge. According to the characteristics of the system transformation in the actual construction steps, demand-capacity ratios were established based on incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) and performance indicators of moment curvature and stability, and the seismic vulnerability research is carried out for the construction stages prone to earthquake damage. Furthermore, it provides a basis for seismic risk assessment of such bridges in different construction stages.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of laser fluence on the post‐transfer cell viability of human colon cancer cells (HT‐29) during a typical biofabrication process, matrix‐assisted pulsed‐laser evaporation direct‐write (MAPLE DW).

Design/methodology/approach

The post‐transfer cell viability in MAPLE DW depends on various operation conditions such as the applied laser fluence. HT‐29 cell was selected as a model mammalian cell to investigate the effect of laser fluence on the post‐transfer cell viability. MAPLE DW‐based HT‐29 cell direct writing was implemented using an ArF excimer laser under a wide range of laser fluence. Trypan blue dye‐exclusion was used to test the post‐transfer cell viability.

Findings

It has been observed that: the HT‐29 cell viability decreases from 95 to 78 percent as the laser fluence increases from 258 to 1,482 mJ/cm2; and cell injury in this study is mainly due to the process‐induced mechanical stress during the cell droplet formation and landing processes while the effects of thermal influence and ultraviolet radiation are below the level of detection.

Research limitations/implications

This paper reveals some interesting relationships between the laser fluence and the post‐transfer mammalian cell viability and injury, and the resulting knowledge of these process‐related relationships helps the wide implementation of MAPLE DW‐based biofabrication. Post‐transfer cell injury reversibility and cell proliferation capacity need to be further elucidated.

Practical implications

This paper will help the wide implementation of cell direct‐write technologies including MAPLE DW to fabricate biological constructs as artificial tissues/organs and bio‐sensing devices.

Originality/value

The shortage of donor organs and the need of various bio‐sensing devices have significantly prompted the development of various biological material‐based direct‐write technologies. Process‐induced cell injury happens during fabricating of biological constructs using different direct‐write technologies including MAPLE DW. The post‐transfer cell viability is a key index to evaluate the feasibility and efficiency of any biofabrication technique. This paper has investigated the effect of laser fluence on the post‐transfer HT‐29 cell viability and injury. The knowledge from this study will help effectively and efficiently fabricate various biological constructs for organ printing and biosensor fabrication applications.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to implement a comparative analysis on the evolution of technology policies of central and local governments in China and to uncover the relationship of technology policies.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative method based on policy contents from policy power, policy goals and policy instruments was developed to build a policy database and, taking Jiangsu province's policy practice as an example, was used to comparatively analyze the evolutionary process and the relationship of technology policies issued by central and local governments in China.

Findings

Comparative analysis shows that technology policies of central government are focused on the strategy of “Market in Exchange for Technology”. However, technology absorption as the critical part to realize the strategy was neglected due to the competition of interests among different agents. Local government has gradually developed a different technology development strategy to promote independent innovation on the basis of its better economic and science and technology conditions. So, the correlation coefficients of technology policies between central and local (Jiangsu) governments on policy power, policy instruments and policy goals have decreased continually.

Research limitations/implications

Because of the limitation of data and time, this paper adopted quantification criteria on the contents of policies. Also, it is necessary to explore the coordination of technology policies between central and local governments.

Practical implications

Chinese technology policies should balance administrative rights reasonably between central and local governments and promote the coordination among the central authority, ministries, commissions, local governments and enterprises.

Originality/value

This paper has made a novel quantitative and comparative analysis about the relationship of technology policies between central and local (Jiangsu) governments.

Purpose

The role of a government investment project (GIP) management supervisor is to improve supervision performance and the Chinese government has issued a series of polices, displaying the determination to solve supervision problems. The purpose of this paper is to assist the government to play its role of supervisor and to realize progress supervision performance for GIP in practice with the Agent Construction System (ACS).

Design/methodology/approach

Taking consideration of the essence of ACS, the paper analyzes the system supported theory, which is a supervision mechanism, with contract management as the core and goals as orientation. The authors design the system frame and its composing modules according to the main function of this information system.

Findings

The research builds an expected supervision information system with four functional modules, which is designed according to logical sequence of supervision, based on a theoretical supervision mechanism.

Originality/value

The system is, to the best of the authors' knowledge, the most advanced and practical information system for GIP supervision published in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a foundational reference and practical guidance for modelling small and poor data with incomplete information.

Design/methodology/approach

The definitions of four basic models of GM(1, 1), such as Even Grey Model (EGM), Original Difference Grey Model (ODGM), Even Difference Grey Model (EDGM) and Discrete Grey Model (DGM), are put forward. The properties and characteristics of different models are studied and their equivalence are proved. The suitable sequences of different models are studied by simulation and analysis with homogeneous exponential sequences, nonhomogeneous exponential increasing sequences and vibration sequences.

Findings

The main conclusions have been obtained as follows: first, the three discrete models of ODGM, EDGM and DGM are suitable for homogeneous exponential sequences or sequences which close to a homogeneous exponential sequence; and second the EGM are suitable for nonhomogeneous exponential increasing sequences and vibration sequences.

Practical implications

The outcome obtained in this paper can be consulted for model selection in the course of practical modelling.

Originality/value

This paper systematically defined the four basic forms of model GM(1, 1) and studied their properties and characteristics, especially their suitable sequences. Although significant progress has been made in this field, such a systematic study on these models and their suitable sequences is still missing as far as we know. It can provide reference and basis for people to choose the correct model in the actual modelling process.
