Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the relationship between individual-level psychological resources and team resilience in the context of expatriate project management teams. It seeks to understand how personal psychological resources contribute to team resilience and explore the dynamic evolution mechanism of team resilience. The goal is to enhance team resilience among expatriates in a BANI (Brittle, Anxious, Nonlinear, and Incomprehensible) world, where organizations face volatile and uncertain conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

An online survey was applied for data collection, and 315 valid samples from Chinese expatriates in international construction projects were utilized for data analysis. A structural equation model (SEM) examines the relationships between personal psychological resources and team resilience. The study identifies five psychological factors influencing team resilience: Employee Resilience, Cross-cultural Adjustment, Self-efficacy, Social Support, and Team Climate. The hypothesized relationships are validated through the SEM analysis. Additionally, a fuzzy cognitive map (FCM) is constructed to explore the dynamic mechanism of team resilience formation based on the results of the SEM.

Findings

The SEM analysis confirms that employee resilience, cross-cultural adjustment, and team climate positively impact team resilience. Social support and self-efficacy also have positive effects on team climate. Moreover, team climate is found to fully mediate the relationship between self-efficacy and team resilience, as well as between social support and team resilience. The FCM model provides further insights into the dynamic evolution of team resilience, highlighting the varying impact effects of antecedents during the team resilience development process and the effectiveness of different combinations of intervention strategies.

Originality/value

This study contributes to understanding team resilience by identifying the psychological factors influencing team resilience in expatriate project management teams. The findings emphasize the importance of social support and team climate in promoting team resilience. Interventions targeting team climate are found to facilitate the rapid development of team resilience. In contrast, interventions for social support are necessary for sustainable, long-term high levels of team resilience. Based on the dynamic simulation results, strategies for cultivating team resilience through external intervention and internal adjustment are proposed, focusing on social support and team climate. Implementing these strategies can enhance project management team resilience and improve the core competitiveness of contractors in the BANI era.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to put forward the lubrication model of oil bearing and enrich the design theory under the condition of mixed lubrication.

Design/methodology/approach

A mixed lubrication model of bilayer porous bearing is established. The effects of the working conditions on the lubrication performance and seepage behavior were analyzed.

Findings

Results show that the oil film pressure mainly occurs in the bearing convergence zone and contact pressure mainly occurs near the minimum film thickness. The oil infiltrates into the porous matrix in the contact area and precipitates out to the friction surface at the inlet of the contact area. The oil seepage velocity and dynamic pressure effect at the friction interface can be improved by reasonably matching the load and speed. With the decrease of the external load or increase of the rotating speed, the lubrication performance becomes well.

Originality/value

This study provides a reference for the design and application of oil bearing under harsh working conditions.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the energy-saving effect and mechanism of serpentine as lubricant additive in the simulated condition.

Design/methodology/approach

An ABLT-1 bearing test machine was used for 1,350 hours and an MM-W1 three-pin-on-disk apparatus was used to investigate its anti-friction effect. The worn surface was characterized by scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy.

Findings

The results show that the energy-saving effect was improved after adding serpentine powder in oil and that both the friction coefficient and mass loss were dramatically decreased. The analysis on worn surface layer demonstrates that an auto-reconditioning surface layer was formed on the worn surface, which was responsible for the decrease in friction and wear.

Originality/value

The simulation test for the metal bearing was conducted over 1,350 hours using lubricant with and without serpentine powder. The addition of serpentine powder enhanced the energy-saving rate over time, stabilizing at about 13 per cent after 1,000 hours. An auto-reconditioning surface layer was formed on the surfaces of disassembled bearing lubricated with serpentine doped oil, resulting in dramatic decrease of both the friction coefficient and the mass loss. In addition to normal load and the accumulation of serpentine powder in the furrows and scratches of the deformed layer, the formation of the surface layer was possibly related to the substrate deformation induced by friction force.

Abstract

Introduces a method of food sensory evaluation employing artificial neural networks. The process of food sensory evaluation can be viewed as a multi‐input and multi‐output (MIMO) system in which food composition serves as the input and human food evaluation as the output. It has proved to be very difficult to establish a mathematical model of this system; however, a series of samples have been obtained through experiments, each of which comprises input and output data. On the basis of these sample data, applies the back‐propagation algorithm (BP algorithm) to “train” a three‐layer feed‐forward network. The result is a neural network that can successfully imitate the food sensory evaluation of the evaluation panel. This method can also be applied in other fields such as food composition optimizing, new product development and market evaluation and investigation.

Abstract

Purpose

Serpentine is usually added into the lubricant oil to form a self-repairing protective layer on worn ferrous surface. But few works have paid close attention to the preparation of composites with the addition of serpentine. In this work, serpentine reinforced Al matrix composites were successfully prepared to be industrial lubrication components. And its fabricating parameters, compressive strength and tribological properties were analyzed.

Design/methodology/approach

An MM-W1 three-pin-on-disk apparatus was used to investigate the tribological properties. The worn surface, microstructure and cross-sectional morphologies were characterized by scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy. The compression test was carried out on a universal testing machine. An X-ray diffractometer was used to investigate the phase constitutions. The decomposition temperature of serpentine powders was investigated by a thermal analyzer, which allows simultaneous differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry. With the help of finite element method model, a diagrammatic model of the self-repairing surface layer was developed to analyze the anti-friction mechanism.

Findings

Through evaluating density and Brinell hardness, sintering at 560°C for 3 h are the appropriate parameters for fabricating the composites. Compressive strength was increased by the addition of serpentine. A self-repairing surface layer was formed, reducing the friction coefficient. And a diagrammatic model of the self-repairing surface layer was developed to analyze the anti-friction mechanism.

Originality/value

Serpentine was added in fabricating the Al matrix composites for the first time. Sintering parameters were optimized to make better Al/Si/serpentine composites. Compressive strength was increased by the addition of serpentine. A self-repairing surface layer was formed, reducing the friction coefficient under the dry sliding condition. And a diagrammatic model of the self-repairing surface layer was developed to analyze the anti-friction mechanism. It is hoped to be helpful in further confirming the factors for the formation of the self-repairing surface layer, and in designing a new industrial anti-friction composite used for dry sliding conditions.

Abstract

Purpose

The economic reforms which turned the centrally planned economy to a market economy have profoundly changed the tripartite relationship between the state, work unit, and citizen in urban China and brought significant changes to the institutional care provision for young children. The aim of this paper is to investigate the changes to the institutional care since 1980, with particular emphasis on the most recent years from mid‐1990s, and explore how the institutional care has changed over the recent decades without a clear institutional basis.

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis draws on second‐hand materials from published literature, a range of longitudinal national and local statistics and policy documents, and also on first‐hand information which was collected in Beijing from in‐depth interviews with key informants and case studies of different kinds of kindergartens.

Findings

The paper finds that the previous work‐unit based public care system has changed to a much more complicated care mix in which the roles of the state, employer, community, market and the informal sector of the family in terms of provision and funding have all changed significantly.

Social implications

The findings of this paper may help to inform appropriate policy responses in Chinese child care provision. The study suggests that formal care provision should be expanded towards universal access regardless of people's income and employment status in China.

Originality/value

The paper questions and complicates the “state withdrawal” representation of social welfare change and argues that it is not “the state” but “the work unit and community organization” retreat from public care provision. It also argues that the change in the role of the state has been multifaceted, and not a simple one‐directional movement of marketization in which the state retreated from welfare provision in entirety.

Abstract

Purpose

Under the new policy framework, the China Government will substantially increase education resources investment. As a result, financial under‐provision of schools will not be the main problem in the near future. However, school efficiency will emerge as the new factor in attracting the attention of the government and the public in China, which is also one of the important fields of Education Economics research.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to evaluate a sample of 58 primary schools in six districts in Beijing, hoping to find the solutions to school efficiency improvement as a result of under‐adequate investment.

Findings

In the years to come, the central government of China will continue to enhance transferring payment from the exchequer. The education input will be assured accordingly. However, if schools run under low efficiency, the education resources will not be well used and sustainability of elementary education will not be assured.

Originality/value

In light of the research purpose and the limited data, there has been no in‐depth discussion of the impact of, for example, families' social status, district development disparity, social cultural influence and history context. Obviously, considering more factors which may affect school efficiency will help to find the best solution for the public education sector of government.

Abstract

Purpose

As the role of AI on human teams shifts from a tool to a teammate, the implementation of AI teammates into knowledge-intensive crowdsourcing (KI-C) contest teams represents a forward-thinking and feasible solution to improve team performance. Since contest teams are characterized by virtuality, temporality, competitiveness, and skill diversity, the human-AI interaction mechanism underlying conventional teams is no longer applicable. This study empirically analyzes the effects of AI teammate attributes on human team members’ willingness to adopt AI in crowdsourcing contests.

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire-based online experiment was designed to perform behavioral data collection. We obtained 206 valid anonymized samples from 28 provinces in China. The Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) model was used to test the proposed hypotheses.

Findings

We find that the transparency and explainability of AI teammates have mediating effects on human team members’ willingness to adopt AI through trust. Due to the different tendencies exhibited by members with regard to three types of cognitive load, nonlinear U-shaped relationships are observed among explainability, cognitive load, and willingness to adopt AI.

Originality/value

We provide design ideas for human-AI team mechanisms in KI-C scenarios, and rationally explain how the U-shaped relationship between AI explainability and cognitive load emerges.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to propose a fractal model of thermal contact conductance of rough surfaces based on axisymmetric cosinusoidal asperity.

Design/methodology/approach

The effects of contact load, fractal dimension, fractal roughness and friction coefficient on the thermal contact conductance of rough surfaces were investigated in this study.

Findings

The findings suggest that as the contact load increases, the thermal contact conductance of rough surfaces also increases. In addition, an increase in the fractal dimension corresponds to an increase in the thermal contact conductance. Conversely, an increase in fractal roughness leads to a decrease in thermal contact conductance. The smaller the friction coefficient, the lower the thermal contact conductance of the rough surface. In practical engineering applications, it is possible to achieve the desired thermal contact conductance of rough surfaces by selecting surfaces with appropriate roughness.

Originality/value

A fractal model of thermal contact conductance of rough surfaces based on axisymmetric cosinusoidal asperity was established in this study. The findings of this study offer a theoretical foundation for investigating the thermal contact conductance of rough surfaces.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to comparatively investigate the microstructure and interfacial intermetallic compound (IMC) layer of Cu/SACPG/Ni and Cu/SAC0307/Ni solder joints after thermal aging.

Design/methodology/approach

The specimens were thermally aged at 150°C for 0, 24, 168 and 500 h. The microstructure and morphology of the interface IMC layer were observed by means of scanning electron microscope. The IMCs and the solder bump surface were analyzed by EDS. Moreover, the thickness of IMC layer was measured by using the image analysis software.

Findings

The morphology of IMC of Cu/SAC0307/Ni solder joint was consistent with that of the Cu/SACPG/Ni joint, which indicates that the addition of P and Ge had little effect on the IMC formation. The needle-like (Cu,Ni)6Sn5 was formed at the interface of solder/Ni solder joints. Meanwhile, the tiny particles inferred as Ag3Sn phase attached to the surface of (Cu,Ni)6Sn5. The growth rate of IMC layer of the Cu/SACPG/Ni joint was smaller than that of Cu/SAC0307/Ni joint with aging time increasing, which means the addition of trace P and Ge can slightly suppress the diffusion rate of the interfacial IMC.

Originality/value

There are no previous studies on the formation mechanism of the IMC layer of SAC0307 solder alloys with P and Ge addition.
