Abstract

Purpose

Building on the intergroup relations perspective on the social identity theory, the authors examine whether firms' environmental, social and governance (ESG) varies when local firms have non-local CEOs. Additionally, the authors examine which contextual factors may strengthen or weaken the effectiveness of ESG in helping non-local CEOs garner trust, legitimacy and resources support from local stakeholders.

Design/methodology/approach

Pooled OLS regressions, based on unbalanced panel data and controlling for year and industry fixed effects, were estimated using a sample composed of 836 Chinese A-share listed firms that have Bloomberg ESG disclosure scores data from 2006 to 2019.

Findings

Results suggest that companies with non-local CEOs, who are perceived as outgroup members by the local stakeholders, would lead to a higher level of ESG performance to overcome the intergroup bias they face. In addition, results also show that companies with a lower level of previous ESG decoupling and having more slack will mitigate the relationship between non-local CEOs and ESG performance. Conversely, firm visibility at a high level will promote the positive relationship between non-local CEOs and ESG performance.

Originality/value

This study offers theoretical insights that extend the focus of intragroup relation to outgroup identity, by introducing an intergroup relations lens to explore how outgroup (or nonprototypical) leaders utilize ESG to counter intergroup bias they suffer. Moreover, this study also extends current literature focusing on non-local CEOs and ESG performance.

Abstract

Purpose

Supply chain finance (SCF) is a promising financing solution for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The study aims to highlight the determinants of the adoption of SCF and the theoretical implications for SCF in SMEs.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing on the theory of planned behaviour (TPB), the authors develop a model and test hypotheses about the factors (1) SE, (2) attitude toward SCF, (3) social influence (SI), (4) adoption intention (AI) and (5) actual adoption (AA) of SCF. Data collected from a survey of 211 managers in SMEs in China were used to conduct a partial least squares (PLS) estimation.

Findings

The empirical results indicate that attitude toward SCF and SI positively affect AI towards SCF, whereas AI positively affects the AA of SCF. Specifically, the authors find that AI plays a mediating role in the relationship between SE and AA of SCF, whereas attitude toward SCF plays a mediating role between SI and AI.

Originality/value

First, the authors use the TPB to study the adoption of SCF in SMEs. Second, the authors apply PLS to clarify the influence mechanism of behavioural factors on the adoption of SCF. The authors provide a useful approach for practitioners in examining the adoption of SCF by SMEs.

This paper aims to identify the impact of the new ambient air quality standards (AAQS) on firm innovation.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to identify the impact of the new ambient air quality standards (AAQS) on firm innovation.

Design/methodology/approach

Taking listed companies from 2009 to 2014 as the research object, the authors focus on the quasinatural experiment of the pilot policy of the new AAQS and apply the time-varying difference-in-differences (DID) method to conduct the empirical test.

Findings

The authors find that the new AAQS has a negative effect on firm innovation, and this negative impact may be caused by the increased environmental expenditures following the implementation of the new AAQS. Furthermore, the authors find that firm profitability and state ownership weaken this negative effect, but the effect of the degree of industrial pollution is statistically insignificant.

Originality/value

The study is an initial effort to explore the causal effect of the new AAQS on firm innovation. This study enriches the literature on the impact of environmental regulations on firm innovation and provides some reference value for the formulation of environmental regulation policies in developing countries.

Abstract

Purpose

In human history, poverty for most and prosperity for few is the norm. Thus, no theory or practice of common prosperity has been developed. Marxism first formulated the theory of common prosperity, and the classical Marxist authors conducted theoretical exploration on the issue of common prosperity, forming a series of scientific conclusions.

Design/methodology/approach

The century-long practical history of the Communist Party of China (CPC) is the great practice of leading the Chinese people in getting rid of poverty, letting some people and regions get rich first and ultimately achieving the goal of common prosperity.

Findings

Common prosperity is the great practice of the CPC that leads all Chinese people in building a modern socialist country in an all-round way in the new era.

Originality/value

The path of common prosperity with Chinese characteristics will certainly arise in the process of the great practice of common prosperity with Chinese characteristics. Based on the anti-poverty theory and the “spirit of poverty alleviation” from the battle against poverty with Chinese characteristics, the theory of common prosperity and its spirit with Chinese characteristics will certainly be formed. The above conclusions constitute the basic principles of the theory of common prosperity with Chinese characteristics.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the influence of founder shareholders’ resources on the allocation of control rights from the perspective of incomplete contract theory and resource-based theory.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper analyzes newspaper materials with NVivo11on a case of battle for corporate control in Chinese top-listed company-Vanke Group.

Findings

The research shows that human capital is the key resource and the holding proportion of financial resources directly affects the allocation of control rights. At the same time, social capital is unstable and easily broken. At last, institutional environment also affects the degree between the relationship of founder shareholders’ resources and the allocation of control rights. The influence of founder-shareholder resources on the allocation of control rights follows the path of “crisis – founder-shareholder’s resources – founder’s ability - allocation of control rights.”

Research limitations/implications

This study only selects the financial capital, human capital and social capital of Shi Wang, the founder of Vanke, as the analysis object. The study can expand the types of founder shareholder resources to verify and enrich the conclusions.

Originality/value

The current theoretical research in the literature focuses on the necessity of equity and shareholder’s resources versus the control rights. Some key factors and mechanism on the relationship have not been fully clarified. The results of this paper not only extend the combination research of social network and corporate governance, but also provide enterprise founders with references for making reasonable decisions during control battle.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a simplified method to predict the pressure of the recess, no matter whether the tilt center coincides with the geometric center of the hydrostatic journal bearings.

Design/methodology/approach

To validate the effectiveness of the presented model, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method and experimental method are performed in this study.

Findings

By comparing the CFD results and the experimental results, the pressure of the recess is related to the tilt direction, the tilt center, the width of the land and the circumferential angle of the land.

Originality/value

The mathematic model requires equivalent resistance of land edge – tilt position, tilt direction, tilt angle and the thickness of oil film instead of any digital iteration. Furthermore, a novel experimental apparatus including a circular hydrostatic bearing called ball bearing is designed to study the tilt effect produced by manufacturing error and offset load force on the pressure of the recess.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of stud height, stud diameter, ultimate stress of stud and concrete strength on the static behaviour of studs in push-off tests based on the ductile fracture theory.

Design/methodology/approach

Push-off tests of headed stud shear connectors with different heights and diameters used in concrete of various strengths were designed and implemented. A finite element model was established based on a ductile fracture criterion of ML15 cold-heading steel with stress triaxiality and Lode angle parameter. Based on the results of the parametric study of the numerical model, equations were proposed to evaluate the effect of stud height hs, stud area As, concrete strength fc and stud ultimate strength fsu used in concrete of various strengths on the static behaviour of studs.

Findings

The typical failure phenomenon observed among the test specimens was the fracture of the shank of studs. The microscopic images of the stud fracture surfaces and the verified finite element model indicate that the studs were fractured as a result of the combined action of tension and shear.

Originality/value

A new method for calculating ultimate load Pu and ultimate slip Su is proposed in this paper. In the method, Pu is linearly related to fsu0.2143, As0.7790, hs0.0974, fc0.2065. Su is linearly related to fsu1.078, As0.4681, hs(−0.3135), fc(−0.3480).

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to the information about consumer product quality and safety that can easily attract public attention and become the focus of public opinion. In recent years, the fast-growing social media have become an import platform for firms for releasing product quality and safety information and for firms and governments to hear public opinion.

Design/methodology/approach

To explore how information about consumer product quality and safety gets disseminated and a public opinion is formed in social media, this paper proposes two information transmission models, one with government intervention and the other without government intervention, based on the theory of complex network. A simulation case study in MATLAB is conducted to verify the proposed models.

Findings

Information transmission models were constructed, one without government intervention and one with government intervention. The influence of information transmission with government intervention was analyzed. MATLAB was used to simulate the Barabasi and Albert (BA)-based model to consider event information level, government information level and possible panic population proportion. The government intervention effect was evaluated.

Originality/value

Based on a complex network, the derived transmission rule can provide decision-making support for monitoring and managing Web information of consumer product quality and safety.
