Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the potential of corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives in an Indian context, especially in the light of the “skilling India” mission initiated by the government. The aim here is to understand the dynamics of CSR initiatives and how they can be a catalyst for the training of skilled labour in support of the Indian hospitality industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The research is exploratory in nature and is primarily based on qualitative data. Semi-structured interviews were conducted for data collection. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to draw out insights as to how practitioners in corporate entities experience the role and potential of CSR initiatives in the context of the “skilling India” mission initiated by the Government of India. Also, secondary data, such as academic, institutional and trade literature, were studied.

Findings

The paper discusses the immense but untapped potential that CSR measures hold for “skilling India”. It also explores the prevailing gap and the possible measures to be taken to meet the requirement for skilled labour now and in the future.

Originality/value

The paper integrates CSR possibilities with the government’s mission to improve the skills-deficit problem. The findings of the paper reveal significant aspects of CSR initiatives and adds value through corporate initiatives, in turn bridging the gap and addressing the critical need for skilled labour in the Indian hospitality industry.

Abstract

Purpose

This systematic literature review aims to explore the adoption, global acceptance and implementation of human resources (HR) analytics (HRA) by reviewing literature on the subject. HRA adoption can assist HR professionals in managing complex procedures and making strategic human resource management (SHRM) decisions more effectively. The study also aims to identify the applications of analytics in various disciplines of management.

Design/methodology/approach

The review is conducted using a domain-based structured literature review (SLR), emphasizing the diffusion of innovative thinking and the adoption process of HRA among early adopters. The philosophical stances are analyzed with the combination of research onion model and PRISMA protocol. Secondary data are gathered from published journals, books, case studies, conference proceedings, web pages and media stories as the primary source of information.

Findings

The study finds that skilled professionals and management assistance can significantly impact adoption intentions, enabling professionals to deal with analytics. The examples and analytical models provided by early adopters allow managers to manage complex processes and make SHRM decisions.

Research limitations/implications

The study suggests that the lack of use of quantitative techniques is a key limitation and should be considered in future studies. Despite the rise in the number of research papers on HRA, its application in the workplace remains limited.

Practical implications

This research can assist managers in implementing HRA and help resolve complex and inefficient processes, making SHRM decisions.

Originality/value

This study adds to the existing body of knowledge on how HRA can aid a company's efficacy and performance and can be considered one of the first to link adoption and HRA.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the extensive literature on blockchain technology (BT) and human resource management (HRM) in enterprises and set the future scope of research in the adoption of BT in HRM.

Design/methodology/approach

A framework-based review of the literature (Callahan, 2014; Paul and Criado, 2020) is adopted for the present study. The 6 W-Framework developed by Callahan (2014) is used for the development of a conceptual framework on BT and HRM and could address HRM issues through the applications of BT.

Findings

This study focused on the major HR issues, i.e., regulation, staffing and development, and change management. These issues were categorized into sub-categories. The major implementation of BT in HRM is highlighted. The study developed a framework to aid HR professionals in implementing blockchain in the decision-making process of HRM.

Research limitations/implications

The current study is limited to the bias on the part of employers in providing feedback and data feeding. Blockchain being at its infancy stage did not allow much of pieces of literary works to be introduced.

Practical implications

Implementation of ledger technology in managerial functions will reduce the time, money and effort required by potential recruiters and HR professionals. Using this technology, the time and cost required to verify and sort the right potential can be reduced.

Originality/value

The present work offers benefits to HR professionals and practitioners by expediting the process of effective decision-making of HRM employing BT.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to show the relevance of teachers’ extra role behaviour towards improving students’ learning efficacy status. This study examines the intervening role of art-based teaching pedagogies, i.e. involvement of different forms of art during the traditional teaching session between extra role behaviour and students’ learning efficacy.

Design/methodology/approach

The statistical test results showed that teachers’ extra role behaviour is significant for improving and strengthening students’ learning efficacy. Further, the moderation analysis showed that if art is integrated with teachers’ extra role behaviour, the effect on learning efficacy of students will increase. Art-based teaching pedagogies suggest involvement of art in teaching practices. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to evaluate the direct effect of extra role behaviour on students’ learning efficacy with the intervening role of art-based teaching pedagogies.

Findings

Results indicated a linear effect of teachers’ extra role behaviour on students’ learning efficacy and that art-based teaching pedagogies had an indirect effect (mediation) on students’ learning efficacy.

Originality/value

The study will bridge the gap between academic initiatives taken and its overall implementation in primary and secondary schools.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate how Oachira Panthrandu Vilakku (twelve-lamp) festival in Oachira helps in providing economic benefits to local residents of the town during the pilgrimage season.

Design/methodology/approach

Stakeholder interviews and focus-group roundtable discussions with multiple stakeholders were conducted.

Findings

Policy changes have been studied and recommended for enhancing the economic value of the culturally embedded Panthrandu Vilakku festival celebrated in Oachira, Kerala, India.

Practical implications

There is huge untapped potential for India’s festivals in India. While efforts are made to leverage these for economic gains, the negative impacts also need to be recognized and mitigated.

Originality/value

The study is significant in the context of arresting economic leakage and promoting an ecosystem of decision-making at community level by the local residents.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to profile the Worldwide Hospitality and Tourism Themes’ theme issue “How can the skilling India initiative become a solution to the critical need for skilled labour in the Indian hospitality industry?” with reference to the experiences of the theme editors and writing team.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper uses structured questions to enable the theme editors to reflect on the rationale for the theme issue question, the starting point, the selection of the writing team and material and the editorial process.

Findings

This paper reviews progress relating to the implementation of the “Skill India” initiative and its impact on the skilled-labour shortage as it relates to hospitality and tourism. Arising from the analysis are suggestions and recommendations to enhance the initiative’s effectiveness.

Practical implications

This paper observes that the Skill India initiative is an ambitious effort to facilitate skills-based training, but there are numerous concerns about its design and implementation.

Originality/value

This paper provides insights from both practitioner’s and academic’s perspectives as to how to overcome the gap in the availability of skilled and trained labour in the Indian hospitality industry.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify the major factors influencing the consumers to prefer milk products and also to analyze the awareness level of the Indian consumers.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the data is obtained through a structured questionnaire from Indian consumers considering convenience sampling under the nonprobability sampling technique. The consumer preference is explained using a multiple-regression model followed by analysis of variance (ANOVA), which shed insight on the significant differences between the variables that influence consumer preference for dairy products.

Findings

Investigation is done to analyze the factors influencing the consumers' buying behavior toward milk and its products. The results showed that quality, health consciousness, price and availability are the most influencing factors to buy milk products. Quantity of milk showed a significant relationship between age, monthly income and family size.

Research limitations/implications

This study helps marketing managers to frame the marketing strategies based on consumer preference, quality, health consciousness, price and availability. The research outcome will not only be advantageous for the entrepreneurial perspective but also takes care of consumer likeliness. Though the research reveals the opinion of Indian consumers, it limits the likeliness of the western world. Because of the scarcity of resources, several dairy products are unexplored, which could pave the future scope of research.

Originality/value

The novelty of this study is to identify the quality, health consciousness, price and availability are the most influencing factors to buy milk products considering ANOVA and the multiple regression model.

Abstract

Purpose

In the context of emerging economies, the purpose of this paper is to seek the critical success factors (CSFs) of supply chain and identify their relationships to enhance the supply chain performance (SCP) in a sample of Indian manufacturing firms.

Design/methodology/approach

On the basis of a comprehensive literature review, the authors conducted this study and proposed a new model of antecedent and outcomes for SCP in emerging markets. The empirical data for this study were drawn from a survey of 227 Indian firms, resulting in a response rate of 52 percent. The method of confirmatory factor analysis was applied to refine the CSFs and SCP scale for empirical analysis. The data were analyzed by employing the structural equation modeling technique.

Findings

The results reveal that all the identified CSFs, namely, agility, flexibility, flexible innovation, information and communication technology, collaboration among conglomerate divisions, process structure, and training and leadership programs, are positively associated with SCP. The empirical study of 227 Indian firms lent good support to the hypotheses and validates it by the data analysis. Consequently, these findings highlight the prominence of these factors of supply chain for gaining a sustainable competitive advantage in emerging market scenario.

Research limitations/implications

The study emphasizes on CSFs in emerging markets that will help to boost the organization’s SCP through agility and flexibility in supply chain. This study is applicable for growing markets in which there is ample amount of resources.

Originality/value

As economic growth stagnates in developed economies, emerging markets grow at near double-digit rates. Somehow, this study is pioneer in terms of enhance SCP in emerging market scenario. Moreover, the outcome of the study could provide empirical evidence of the effects of CSFs on SCPs.

Abstract

Purpose

Agility is the ability of an organization to adjust its supply chain tactics and operations to respond quickly against altering business environments such as fluctuating demand pattern, supply chain disruption and global competition. An agile organization must possess a promising capability of swiftly responding to dynamic conditions while being cost-effective without compromising the efficiency. Such high-performance adaptability necessitates the role of supply chain managers to maximize the agility of the supply chain through the efficient use of input resources. Therefore, the purpose of this study to reveal a new decision support tool that would allow the key decision-makers to maximize the agility of the supply chain while deploying the input resources more effectively.

Design/methodology/approach

In present study, an integrated approach of popular analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and goal programming (GP) has been adopted as a potential solution methodology. AHP has been implemented to allocate the local and global weights to decision variables, whereas GP incorporates the AHP weights into the desired model.

Findings

It was found that the proposed decision support tool restricts the value of the decision variables for maximizing the agility and optimizing the usage of input resources. The results obtained from the model validate the objective of achieving targeted agility level within the available resource limitations.

Research limitations/implications

The decision support tool developed in the proposed study offers a systematic and effectively simple approach to supply chain managers with a goal of identifying the degree of focus under each decision variable in the respective manufacturing organizations.

Originality/value

A novel decision support tool has been developed known as an agility control system), which helps the decision-maker to achieve the required agility in the supply chain by controlling the decision variables.

Abstract

Purpose

Recent technological advancements, often linked to Industry 4.0, require organizations to be more agile and innovative. Blockchain technology (BT) holds immense potential in driving organizations to achieve efficiency and transparency in supply chains. However, there exist some insurmountable challenges associated with the adoption of BT in organizational supply chains (SC). This paper attempts to categorically identify and systematize the most influential challenges in the implementation of BT in SC.

Design/methodology/approach

This study resorts to an extensive literature review and consultations with experts in the field of supply chain management (SCM), information technology and academia to identify, categorize and prioritize the major challenges using VlseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR) and Combined Compromise Solution method (CoCoSo).

Findings

The top three classes of challenges revealed in this study are privacy challenges (PC), infrastructure challenges (IC) and transparency challenges (TC). Maintaining a balance between data openness and secrecy and rectification of incorrect/erroneous input are the top two challenges in the PC category, integration of BT with sustainable practices and ensuring legitimacy are the top two challenges in the IC category, and proper and correct information sharing in organizations was the top most challenge in the TC category.

Originality/value

Future scholars and industry professionals will be guided by the importance of the challenges identified in this study to develop an economical and logical approach for integrating BT to increase the efficiency and outcome of supply chains across several industrial sectors.
