Abstract

Purpose

This collaborative paper presents three case studies on four scholars' experiences with remote data collection. The authors highlight the challenges and strengths of online qualitative research across three disparate projects: an interdisciplinary exploration of matrilineal heritage, an examination of Irish women's sexual identity and an investigation of dress practices among Tz'utujil-Maya.

Design/methodology/approach

Qualitative researchers traditionally go into the field to explore and understand social phenomena. At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, while people faced the daily realities of a worldwide crisis from within their homes, remote data collection became a necessary strategy to pursue knowledge. As a result, researchers adapted to unknowns regarding recruiting, scheduling, technology, interviewing and analysis.

Findings

Participant and researcher experiences during the adaptation to remote interviewing yielded important lessons on research strategies.

Originality/value

Outcomes from these studies highlight the potential value of online data collection alongside the necessity for flexibility in designing and conducting qualitative research.

Abstract

Purpose: This study examines the relationship between marital satisfaction and sexual satisfaction, as well as other contributing factors, in the lives of older American adults.

Design/methodology/approach: Data from a restricted sample (N = 1,278) from the second wave of the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP) was analyzed. Regression models were used to examine associations with marital satisfaction.

Findings: Within ordinary least squares regression gender, education level, mental health, self-rated happiness, the absence of sexual quality, physical satisfaction, and emotional satisfaction were each statistically significant. Females reported higher marital satisfaction than males. Higher educated individuals expressed less satisfaction within their marriages than those with less formal education. Those that rated their mental health, happiness, and physical and emotional satisfaction high also reported higher marital satisfaction. Participants that reported an absence of sexual quality generally rated their marital satisfaction lower.

Originality/value: Most studies focus on the experiences of younger and middle-aged adults, often excluding older adults. Further, while there have been efforts to focus more research on the relationships of adults in midlife to late life, sexuality is still largely ignored.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a deeper understanding of how to implement a professional development training strategy for the Adaptive Mentorship (AM) model (Ralph and Walker, 2010a) and explore how cooperating teachers used the model, not only to assist pre-service teachers in their development, but also to reflect on their role as a mentor.

Design/methodology/approach

This research design uses a collective case study approach. The researchers are positioned in the study as active agents, not only in the traditional way as administrating a questionnaire but as participant leaders. The questionnaire was designed to collect data on the frequency of use and effectiveness of the AM model. It was sent to cooperating teachers, for two years from two different cohorts (n=141, n=123).

Findings

By the end of the second year 84 percent of the cooperating teachers said they “did or mostly did” understand the AM model after the seminar. Less than half of the cooperating teachers (42 percent) recommended that the AM model should be used at seminar. Of the rest, while 21 percent were not in favor of the AM model being used, 37 percent would consider using it at seminar. The findings in this study suggest that for many cooperating teachers the notion of reciprocal development had not yet permeated their consciousness.

Originality/value

This study will guide future cooperating teacher professional development sessions to support cooperating teachers as they make the paradigmatic shift from supervisor to mentor. To the knowledge it is the only study that explores the professional development training necessary for implementing the AM model with an entire cohort of interns.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to outline one innovative Australian initiative to harness creative, often intangible, knowledge, and reap the benefits of the intellectual capital of dance artists both during and post performing careers – the project Securing Career Opportunities and Professional Employment (SCOPE) which has been running for the last three years in conjunction with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).

Design/methodology/approach

Unlike much of the work in the field of knowledge management that concentrates on individual organization knowledge management processes and practices, this paper takes an industry‐sector‐wide perspective, utilizing written, and oral data sources.

Findings

International focus on innovation, entrepreneurship, creativity and knowledge management has led to a growing recognition of the role of the creative industries for our post industrial economic well being. Dance plays a central role as a unique way of knowing and learning, with both intrinsic and instrumental value. Whilst there is diversity among dance artists, one unifying feature is short careers as performers. Having amassed an array of special attributes and competencies that are beneficial, it is crucial for artists to manage the knowledge gained through their training and careers in order to sustain and reap the benefits of their intellectual capital. The creative value of dance artists' capabilities can be a beacon in the link between creativity and economic outcomes. SCOPE is especially innovative as, unlike other programs, it moves beyond the notion of a transition program to emphasizing that of career development and sector knowledge management.

Originality/value

The research case study approach contributes to a fuller understanding of a very under researched area – first, that of management in the performing arts; and second, in knowledge management within an industry sector.
