Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore the feasibility of using ChatGPT-based chatbot systems as an alternative to traditional knowledge base-based chatbot systems in library and information centers (LICs).

Design/methodology/approach

The study used a qualitative research approach to examine the viability of ChatGPT-based chatbot systems in LICs. The researchers conducted an extensive literature review and analyzed data collected from interviews with experts in the field of library and information science.

Findings

The findings of the study reveal that ChatGPT-based chatbot systems are a viable alternative to traditional knowledge base-based chatbot systems in LICs. ChatGPT has the potential to provide more accurate and personalized responses to user queries, improve the user experience and reduce the workload of library staff. However, there are some limitations to the use of ChatGPT in LICs, such as the need for substantial training data and the risk of perpetuating biases.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is one of the first to explore the potential of ChatGPT-based chatbot systems in the context of LICs. The research provides insights into the advantages and limitations of ChatGPT-based chatbots and highlights the possibilities for future use of this technology in the information service industry.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research paper is to explore the significance of language processing in library systems and evaluate the effectiveness of integrating artificial intelligence and generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) technology in modern libraries. Specifically, the paper focuses on SheetGPT, a Google Sheet and GPT Plugin and its impact on language processing in library systems.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper adopts a comprehensive analysis approach to evaluate the integration of SheetGPT in library systems. The authors outlined a user-friendly approach for installation and use of SheetGPT using its “beginner plan”, appropriate for personal/student use or extended experimentation. The study includes a quantitative analysis to provide a thorough understanding of the benefits and limitations of SheetGPT in library systems.

Findings

The findings of this research paper suggest that SheetGPT is a highly effective language-processing tool for library systems. Additionally, ChatGPT’s integration with Google Sheets and easy accessibility over Google Marketplace makes it an efficient and user-friendly tool for library professionals. Overall, this study highlights the potential of SheetGPT to enhance language processing in library systems

Originality/value

This research paper contributes to the existing literature by providing a comprehensive analysis of the effectiveness of SheetGPT in library systems. The study’s approach is unique in that it evaluates SheetGPT’s impact on language processing and provides insights into its benefits and limitations. The study’s findings are original and provide a valuable resource for library professionals and researchers interested in exploring the potential of SheetGPT to enhance language processing in library systems.

Abstract

Purpose

The recent COVID-19 pandemic affects all segments of the population in all possible fields of life. To encounter this critical situation and to safeguard the health of the library users & library staff, the library services have been forced to adapt and accept the “new normal” and give a greater use and reliance on virtual space than ever before with physical spaces. This paper aims to demonstrate an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven solution that can be practically implemented in the form of a “InfoBot” or “Chatbot” to fulfil user needs 24/7 with minimal or without human intervention.

Design/methodology/approach

To give a general overview of the use of AI Chatbot in libraries and its multitasking features followed by the practical implementation, a versatile AIchatbot service, Engati is used as a target bot with its basic free plan.

Findings

The study findings reveal that AI Chatbots offer a dependable solution for the libraries to initiate virtual assistance, thus augmenting the reference service while adding a newer dimension to virtual reference service.

Social implications

Innovative and intelligent information service would be overcoming the time and location barriers reaffirming the concept of “library without walls” while falling in line with the five laws of library science as propounded by Dr S.R. Ranganathan, the father of library science in India.

Originality/value

Though the implementation of bots and chatbots is not a purely novel concept to explore, no such research has been conducted focusing particularly on its exceptional benefits in the library in reference to the recent pandemic.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate and identify the status of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) conformance levels (A, AA, AAA) and accessibility status in terms of Severity (Error, Warning and Review) and Responsibility (Editor, Webmaster and Developer) of Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) Library websites based on Siteimprove Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform.

Design/methodology/approach

The library websites of IITs were tested using Siteimprove web-tool to gather details pertaining to W3C's WCAG 2.1 standards. The data thus obtained were then visualized using spreadsheet software for greater insight. A partial correlation test was also done to assess the relationship between the three conformance levels.

Findings

The study could identify significant accessibility-related limitations of the IIT library websites concerning the three WCAG 2.1 conformance levels A (max IIT Bombay), AA (max IIT Dhanbad (ISM)) and AAA (max IIT Gandhinagar and IIT Varanasi (BHU)), Severity and Responsibility. A positive linear relationship exists amongst these conformance levels. The mean value of conformance levels were found to be 18.3 (A), 2.2 (AA) and 3.1 (AAA); Severity scores were found to be 14.4 (Error), 3.9 (Warning) and 5.2 (Review); and Responsibility scores were found to be 6 (Editor), 9.3 (Webmaster) and 8.3 (Developer), respectively.

Practical implications

The study highlights the comparative picture of accessibility issues and conformance levels of the IITs' library website homepage with the help of results derived/based on Siteimprove Accessibility Checker. The findings of the study reveal that though the library website of IITs' in India possess a well-designed and easily navigable website homepage as far as their accessibility for VIPs is concerned, there are several issues that are still to be resolved.

Social implications

World Intellectual Property Organization's (WIPO) Marrakesh VIP Treaty (MVT) and the W3C's WCAG cater to the requirements and rights of the persons with vision-related disability of accessing information and knowledge building a steeper and deeper knowledge divide. Identifying and rectifying the shortcomings in the library websites will bridge the accessibility-divide and make the society more inclusive.

Originality/value

No previous study could be identified evaluating the accessibility issues of the library website of Indian IITs focussed on vision-disabled persons using Siteimprove. The methodology and approach of this paper have value in terms of reusability and reproducibility facilitating future studies.

Abstract

Purpose

The handicraft sector is unorganized, with tremendous opportunities for generating employment, particularly for the non-urban and bottom of the pyramid (BOP) population. The aim of this paper is to revisit the existing supply chain of the handicraft sector to identify the gaps that can help generate better marketing outcomes for the sector when addressed.

Design/methodology/approach

A mixed method of qualitative and quantitative research has been used. Empirical observations from artisans have been collected to identify different variables impacting the functioning of the handicraft value chain.

Findings

Different variables were identified and grouped into six important dimensions through the mixed-method research. The components were ranked based on importance, which can help in developing a robust supply chain at BOP for the handicraft sector.

Originality/value

Studies on the supply chain of the handicraft sector are rare, and none has tried to understand issues in an integrated way directly from the artisans. This study has captured the voices of the artisans, and through qualitative and quantitative data analyses, the main reasons for the artisans' pain points were identified. This can give directions to a viable business model for the handicraft sector.

The various learning outcomes of the case include the following: to provide information and help the students to understand how a start-up business succeeds with the proper branding and marketing; to help understand different marketing theories related to segmentation, targeting, positioning, branding, distribution and marketing process and the frameworks of understanding start-up business marketing with a practical example; to improve analytical skills and help evaluate marketing strategies related to segmentation, targeting, positioning, branding, distribution and marketing in the Indian quick-service restaurant (QSR) business; and to encourage learners to think differently towards solution generation and strategy decisions.

Case overview/Synopsis

The case portrays the dilemmas related to segmentation, targeting, brand positioning, distribution and start-up business marketing in the context of an Indian QSR. The present case strives to portray the journey of WoW! Momo is a QSR brand in India and highlights the company's branding and marketing challenges. Based on the challenges faced by the company and the decision dilemma pointed out in the case, the readers can get sufficient motivation to generate probable solutions. This was early 2007; Binod Kumar Homagai and Sagar Daryani, bosom friends, were on the verge of finishing their graduate studies in commerce from St. Xavier's College Kolkata. Pursuing Chartered Accountancy or MBA was the common trend as the career option among most commerce graduates then. Still, both Homagai and Daryani thought to be innovative and different in their career options. After a series of discussions, they determined to start with their favorite dish, momos, as an alternative brand proposition that would be opening off from the City of Joy, Kolkata. They managed to arrange a seed capital of INR 30,000 in 2008 and started their venture WoW! Momo. In the financial year 2018–2019, the company's revenue had already crossed INR 1170m, achieved its presence in 11 cities in India, and reached more than 243 outlets. This case has followed the qualitative research methods where in-depth interviews of the founders and stakeholders along with the observation method were used. The case unfolds a systematic solution of dilemmas related to segmentation, targeting, brand positioning, distribution and start-up business marketing in the context of Indian QSR business. This case can also be seen as one of the youth entrepreneurial success stories of Indians.

Complexity academic level

This case is primarily meant for second-year students in a postgraduate program in business management. The case could also be discussed in an executive development program on marketing/brand management/business strategy.
