Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the impact of electronic word of mouth (eWOM) on behavioural intentions of Indian urban millennials to use it when they book travel. The eWOM has been measured on the basis of four dimensions, namely, perceived credibility, quality, quantity and completeness. eWOM attitude is studied as a mediator.

Design/methodology/approach

The study first applies a confirmatory factor analysis to gauge validity and reliability. Then structural equation modelling was applied to test the research hypotheses after collecting responses from 288 Indian millennials from six North Indian cities. Mediation has also been examined using the bootstrapping method. The quality of the data was assured by Harman’s single-factor test.

Findings

The study reveals that millennials’ eWOM attitude fully mediates its perceived quality and its usage intentions at the time of booking travel. However, this mediation effect is partial with respect to other components of eWOM, namely, perceived credibility, perceived quantity and perceived completeness.

Practical implications

India has the largest millennial population (440 million) in the world out of which 33% live in urban cities. Hence, it becomes imperative for travel marketers to understand the attitude of millennials’ towards eWOM, shared on social media. They should understand that millennials prefer eWOM in social media over traditional advertising for fulfilling their informational needs. Therefore, by apprehending the impact of recipients’ perception towards various components of eWOM on their behavioural intentions to use it, market practitioners can design superior marketing campaigns that will help them to gain maximum in the changing business landscape.

Originality/value

The study is unique in the sense that to date no study to the limited knowledge of the researchers has investigated the attitude of Indian millennials towards eWOM on social media as a mediator to comprehend their behavioural intentions to use travel reviews when they book travel.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to empirically evaluate the effect of internal factors of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) on their financing choices. It also examines the financing practices of listed SMEs in India and finds out whether the financing patterns of listed SMEs follow the established theories of corporate finance.

Design/methodology/approach

For this study, 113 SMEs listed on National Stock Exchange Emerge Platform are considered for the period from 2014 to 2018. Panel data regression is applied. The control group has been identified by using the propensity score matching approach. Qualitative information has been collected from the bank officials and the promoters of listed SMEs.

Findings

The study reveals that for meeting financial requirements, listed SMEs initially create current liabilities followed by usage of total reserves. Thereafter, they look for short- and long-term borrowings for further funding options. No significant change is observed in the financing pattern of listed SMEs as compared to their non-listed matched firms. The study suggests that no single theory, including pecking order theory or trade-off theory, could explain the behaviour of SMEs financing completely.

Research limitations/implications

The financing pattern of SMEs can be of great interest to various stakeholders such as government and lenders. As no significant boost is observed in debt financing post listing, this aspect needs to be evaluated by the stakeholders.

Originality/value

This study is significantly different from the existing studies, as it attempts to evaluate the impact of listing on overall financing pattern of SMEs in India. This is also one of the very few studies that uses both quantitative and qualitative information to examine the same.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims at examining the contentions of the agency theory by exploring the direct relationship between environmental, social and governance (ESG) disclosure score and corporate financial performance (CFP) from the years 2016–2020. It also tests for the adaptability of slack resources theory by testing this relationship in the presence of a moderating variable (financial slack).

Design/methodology/approach

The study relies on the data obtained from Bloomberg database of 112 companies belonging to different sectors. It employs the use of partial least square structure equation modelling (PLS-SEM) for carrying out the empirical analysis.

Findings

The results obtained show that there exists a negative relationship between ESG and CFP of the sample firms. These results lend support to the propositions of both the agency theory. Further, the financial slack in the organizations does not ensure a firm's responsible behavior.

Research limitations/implications

The paper provides important implications both from the perspective of managers as well as policymakers. The results of this study will aid the managers in reducing the instances of information asymmetry in the market, thereby tackling the issue of principle agent problems within an organization. From the policy marking perspective, the results of this study will help the regulatory authorities in implementing the necessary rules, regulations and laws that will ensure increased participation from the corporate sector in disclosing their sustainability-related information.

Originality/value

This study is one of its kind to explore the impact of a moderating variable on the ESG-CFP relationship in the context of an emerging economy. It also contributes to the present stream of literature by providing both a theoretical and empirical support to the propositions under consideration.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to provide a systematic review of consumer privacy literature in the context of smartphones and undertake a comprehensive analysis of academic research on this evolving research area.

Design/methodology/approach

This review synthesises antecedents, consequences and mediators reported in consumer privacy literature and presents these factors in a conceptual framework to demonstrate the consumer privacy phenomenon.

Findings

Based on the synthesis of constructs reported in the existing literature, a conceptual framework is proposed highlighting antecedents, mediators and outcomes of experiential marketing efforts. Finally, this study deciphers overlooked areas of consumer privacy in the context of smartphone research and provides insightful directions to advance research in this domain in terms of theory development, context, characteristics and methodology.

Originality/value

This study significantly contributes to consumer behaviour literature, specifically consumer privacy literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to conduct a systematic literature review and bibliometric analysis on the topic of digital labour. The study also identifies the future research directions for the topic.

Design/methodology/approach

In total, 118 research papers were identified and reviewed from 11 established research databases and A*, A and B category journals from the ABDC journal list. The papers covered a timespan between 2006 and 2023. Bibliometric analysis was conducted to identify key research hotspots.

Findings

The emergent themes and associated sub-themes related to digital labour were identified from the literature. The paper found three significant themes that include digital labour platform, gig economy and productivity. This study also acts as a platform to initiate further research in this field for academicians, scholars, industry practitioners and policymakers. The future research scope in the topic is also presented.

Originality/value

The present study is unique in its nature as it approaches the topic of digital labour from all relevant perspectives.

Abstract

Purpose

Given the urgency in taking climate action, the purpose of this paper is to propose a conceptual framework to drive corporate environmental responsibility (CER) through environmentally responsible decision making (ERDM) by incorporating two interventions, the accuracy of mental models (MM) of the key decision makers and green nudging.

Design/methodology/approach

Relevant theories in management, cognition and behavioral sciences are studied and leaned on to build this conceptual framework.

Findings

Our mind creates MM about the real world to illustrate what we think about the world and about how it works. MM are clouded with biases and misconceptions. These MM have a tremendous impact on our behavior. The authors present how increasing the accuracy of the MM of environmental phenomena leads to efficient sensemaking and directs an ERDM thereby contributing to the environmental responsibility gestures of an organization. Green nudges attack the choice architecture of the decision maker toward ERDM.

Research limitations/implications

This framework contributes to the literature on corporate social responsibility. It advances the theories at the intersection of business, economy and natural environment. The framework built with assumptions opens the scope for future research and empirical testing.

Practical implications

This framework contributes to practice by recommending implementable and sustainable interventions. The inaccuracies found may become the base for a sector-wise training program. Due to mimetic isomorphism, driving CER may reap policy implications.

Originality/value

This multi-level conceptual framework is the first to propose individual level drivers of organizational level outcome CER through MM of environmental phenomena of key decision makers and green nudging. The paper offers complementary interventions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the linear and nonlinear effects of market integration on carbon emissions and explore the direct and indirect paths of market integration on carbon emissions through path analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors first conduct a measurement and contrastive study of the market integration and carbon emissions of China’s 28 provinces from year 1995 to 2015. Then, the linear effect of market integration on carbon emissions is analyzed by using the fixed-effect model. Next, based on the path analysis method, the direct and indirect paths of market integration’s impact on carbon emissions are explored. Finally, the panel threshold regression model is used to evaluate the effect of market integration on carbon emissions under different situations of geographic distance.

Findings

The results show that first, the improvement of market integration can increase carbon emissions in the form of a linear relationship. Second, market integration not only has a direct and positive impact on the carbon emissions, but also has an indirect and positive impact on carbon emissions through the level of economic development, and a negative impact on carbon emissions through technological level. Third, an increase in market integration can reduce its positive effect on carbon emissions, but the improvement of economic growth and technology level can both enhance the positive effect of market integration on carbon emissions.

Research limitations/implications

This paper focuses on the impact of market integration on carbon emissions in 30 provinces in China, while, the authors do not conduct a comparative analysis of different regions, so there are certain limitations. In addition, policy interaction between regional governments is also a key factor affecting carbon emissions, but this paper does not consider the effect of policy interaction, future follow-up research will try to incorporate it into the analytical models.

Practical implications

An important practical implication of this research is that market integration should be regarded highly in China’s energy conservation and emission reduction efforts. The research results have important reference value for policy authorities to formulate relevant policies. That is, the government can play a more active role in the process of integration through breaking the regional blockade and interest barriers to comprehensively improve resource utilization efficiency and technical level, and ultimately achieve regional low-carbon development.

Originality/value

This paper explores the effects of market integration on China’s carbon emissions based on different methods and perspectives, and confirms that market integration plays a vital role in China’s carbon emissions through economic growth and technological progress. Notably, based on the studied results, some specific and practical suggestions are proposed in this paper so as to reduce carbon emission and realize the sustainable development of economy and society in China.

Purpose

Understanding attrition in this VUCA world has become imperative for organizations to ensure they are able to sustain themselves. While focus on understanding attrition is important, it is equally important to retain acquired talent, at the same time add value to the human side of business. The purpose of this paper is to explore the factors which play crucial role in retention of newly hired employees working in Indian IT industry. The study has considered factors, namely, supervisor support behavior, feedback-seeking behavior (FSB), affective commitment (AC) and empirically verified their impact on new recruit’s intention to quit (IQ).

Design/methodology/approach

The survey was conducted among 524 newly hired employees working in 58 different companies listed in National Association of Software Services Companies member directory in Indian IT industry. All the scales used in the study are reliable and validated. Confirmatory factor analysis was carried out to test the validation of scales. The data were analyzed to test the proposed structural model using structural equation modeling.

Findings

The present study has successfully blended and verified the effect of supportive behavior of supervisor and new recruit’s FSB on the AC and IQ of newly hired employees. The study highlighted that supportive supervisors can encourage the newly hired employees to seeking feedback and enhance their commitment toward the organization. Further, this reduces the turnover intention of employees.

Research limitations/implications

The theoretical contribution of the study is in successful amalgamation of two major streams of studies on new recruits by assessing the effect of supervisors’ supportive behaviors and new recruits’ proactive FSB on their IQ. The study has also looked at the newly hired employees’ behavioral reactions during uncertain entry period and throughout the adjustment process. The limitations of the study are in the focus on one industry and cross-sectional data. In the future researchers can explore the relationships in a longitudinal study. Also, other variables like perceived organizational support and job satisfaction can be considered.

Practical implications

The present study demonstrates that supportive supervisors can motivate newly hired employees to seek feedback, and help them to “fit in” the organization. This study verifies that supervisors are considered as an important source of information for new recruits and the new recruits’ FSB positively influences their commitment toward the organization. Based on these results it is imperative for managers to be approachable and available to offer feedback to the new recruits in their initial days to ensure their adjustment, commitment and retention in the organization. This adds to sustaining the business and social well-being of the employees.

Originality/value

The present study offers a critical insight about the retention of newly hired employees in the organization. In the quickly changing VUCA world, these newly hired employees can be an asset for companies to build competitive advantage. However, to construct a strong future team for the organization, it is imperative that companies focus on augmentation of commitment among newly hired employees to further retain them. The present study proposes the path of empowerment among the new recruits to make them committed to the organization and to make sure that they stay with the organization in long run.

Abstract

Purpose

Small farmers, being the primary producers of crops, are the key players in the food supply chain. Yet, they remain the most marginalized in the value chain. The marginalization of small farmers can affect food sustainability. The purpose of this paper is to identify opportunities for bringing more value to small farmers in an agricultural value chain.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper makes use of action research, studying the potato value chain, in a developing agricultural country Pakistan. The authors conducted an in-depth study of 37 farmers in four regions, each being a large potato growing ecosystem. The study examined the end-to-end decision-making processes, sources of input (both physical and information), cultivation and sales practices, cost structure, productivity and profitability of the farmers in potato farming.

Findings

Large variations exist in the crop yield, cost structure and profitability of farmers within each of and among the four regions due to differences in cultivation practices and approach to sales. There is a significant potential to lower costs, increase yield and enhance overall profitability by using the existing better processes. By addressing the issues faced by small farmers their profits can be potentially doubled. The paper also discusses potential means of recrafting and streamlining the value chain to bring more value to small farmers.

Research limitations/implications

The paper provides a detailed account of how different interventions can increase the value for small farmers. Since the current food supply chain and sustainability are under stress, worldwide, the findings of this study have implications for farmers as well as policy makers.

Originality/value

The literature on streamlining the agricultural value chain and enhancing the share of small farmers is scarce. Improving the value chain and reducing the marginalization of small farmers is an essential step toward increasing food sustainability.
