Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to inspect the organizational culture of academic libraries in Vietnam and China, and the objective was to investigate how the academic libraries in Vietnam and China differ in organizational culture’s task, unity and status orientations.

Design/methodology/approach

This study surveyed 546 academic library staff in China and Vietnam to fulfill this objective. Exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and paired t-tests are used to explore whether the organizational culture in the academic libraries in Vietnam and China is different in terms of task orientation, unity orientation and status orientation.

Findings

The results from the data concluded that academic libraries in Vietnam had a higher score on task and status orientations than their Chinese counterparts. In this study, there were no coherent factors regarding unity orientation.

Practical implications

This research expresses several solutions to address the problems in academic libraries in Vietnam and China. Scholars and practitioners can benefit from this research as it is a foundation to support them in understanding the organizational culture of libraries in two countries.

Originality/value

This research expands the scope of organizational culture literature in the Asian library sector. Given that no prior studies have compared the library cultures between the two countries, this study is a novelty. The findings of this research can support academic library staff, leaders and practitioners in Vietnam and China to understand their organizational culture. The research also identifies some recommendations to improve the academic library culture in Vietnam and China.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines the associations between leadership behaviours, organizational commitment, occupational stress and organisational citizenship behaviours (OCBs) at the Vietnamese private business school libraries. Another objective of this research is to explore the mediating role of organisational commitment and occupational stress on the connection between leadership behaviours and OCBs.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors collected 294 staffs from various Vietnamese private business school libraries.

Findings

The findings confirm that leadership dimensions significantly influence OCBs, and organisational commitment plays a mediating role in the relationship between relationship-oriented leadership behaviour (ROL) and OCBs.

Practical implications

The current result indicates that two types of leadership behaviour significantly affect employee citizen behaviours. Organisations should also distribute opportunities for workers to stick to citizenship behaviours by implementing organisational commitment interventions.

Originality/value

The obtained findings are a new exploration when no previous empirical literature has investigated the relationships among four constructs.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to explore the influence of leadership skills (technical, human and conceptual) on organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB) with the mediating role of organisational culture in Vietnamese libraries.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative methodology was selected to achieve the objective of this research. Data were gathered through paper/pencil surveys from 201 participants working in various Vietnamese libraries. The convergent validity, consistency reliability and discriminant validity of measures were validated challenged via Stata 15.1 software. The findings of the proposed hypotheses were examined via regression analysis.

Findings

The results partially supported the hypothesis that leadership skills significantly predict OCB. Regarding the relationship between leadership skills and organisational culture, only human skill significantly affected bureaucracy culture. In turn, only bureaucracy culture significantly affected the OCB of individuals (OCBI) and OCB of organisations (OCBO). Finally, bureaucracy culture significantly mediated the relationship between human skill, OCBI and OCBO.

Originality/value

This study opens the scope of research on leadership skills in Vietnamese libraries by exploring three main gaps in the extant studies of leadership approach, namely, the influence of three leadership skills on OCB, the role of leadership in promoting organisational culture and the underlying mechanism through which leadership skills contribute to OCB with the mediation of organisational culture. The implications of the research are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to look into the relationship between leadership skills, especially technical, human and conceptual skills, and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), with organizational culture acting as a mediator.

Design/methodology/approach

For the purpose of this study, a quantitative strategy was adopted. To collect data, paper/online surveys were administered to 294 individuals in various Vietnamese public organizations. Stata 15.1 was used to assess the reliability, validity and consistency of the measurements. Regression analysis was used to evaluate the proposed hypotheses.

Findings

It was discovered that leadership skills have a significant effect on OCB, which partially supported the hypotheses. However, only conceptual skill was found to have a significant impact on individual OCB (OCBI). Conceptual skill was also found to have a significant impact on supportive culture. In addition, only supportive culture had a significant effect on OCBI. Finally, supportive culture was confirmed to mediate the relationship between conceptual skill and OCBI.

Originality/value

This study adds to the social exchange theory by filling three significant gaps in previous research on leadership skills. First, it investigates the impact of three leadership skills on OCB in public organizations. Second, it examines the role of leadership skills in fostering an organizational culture. Third, the paper concludes by investigating the underlying mechanism through which leadership skills contribute to OCB via the mediation of organizational culture. The implications of these findings for practice are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the impact of leadership skills (technical, human and conceptual) on organizational citizenship behavior in Vietnamese libraries and the role of organizational culture as the mediator.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative approach was chosen to gather data from 356 participants working in various libraries in Vietnam. The validity of the measures was assessed through regression analysis and SPSS software.

Findings

The results showed that leadership skills do have a significant impact on organizational citizenship behavior, but only human skills had a significant effect on bureaucracy culture. The study also revealed that bureaucracy culture played a significant role in affecting organizational citizenship behavior of organizations. Furthermore, bureaucracy culture was found to mediate the relationship between human skill and organizational citizenship behavior of organizations.

Originality/value

This study makes a valuable contribution to the field by exploring the influence of three types of leadership skills on organizational citizenship behavior and the role of leadership in promoting organizational culture. The findings of this research can help organizations understand the importance of leadership skills and organizational culture in promoting good citizenship behavior among employees. The research implications are discussed and can be used to inform decision-making and future research in the field.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the working skills of Vietnamese librarians in terms of technical, human and conceptual skills. Then, this study suggests recommendations to improve their working skills.

Design/methodology/approach

To attain this objective, the study surveyed 243 Vietnamese librarians. Several statistical tests, including analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the paired t-test, were used to investigate differences in respondents' responses based on demographic variables such as gender, age, education and managerial level.

Findings

Gender appears to impact the working skill of Vietnamese librarians. In detail, the findings indicate that male librarians have higher technical skills than female librarians.

Research limitations/implications

This study opens the scope of working skill literature, particularly in the library sector. Notably, this is the first study investigating this issue in Vietnam. Given the current circumstances, suggesting practical recommendations to enhance the working skills of Vietnamese libraries is essential.

Originality/value

This is the first study examining Vietnamese librarians in technical, human and conceptual skills. Therefore, this research is essential in this field.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of the work–family interface on organizational commitment with the mediating role of occupational stress and organizational justice in Vietnamese state sectors.

Design/methodology/approach

Empirical research is completed with a sample of 294 local respondents. Linear regression analysis is used to test hypotheses.

Findings

The findings of this paper indicate that work–family interfaces partially affect organizational commitment and occupational stress. Also, occupational stress partly plays a mediating role in the relationship between work–family interfaces and organizational commitment. This paper opens the scope of work–family interfaces in an emerging country (Vietnam).

Practical Implications

The results of this paper provide two practical implications for public Vietnamese organizations and leaders. First, superiors and administrators must establish policies for employees to decrease the adverse effects of work–family conflict. Second, supervisors and administrations at local public organizations should distribute additional training to help employees understand the detrimental impact of work–family conflict and occupational stress and how to solve them.

Originality/value

This paper strengthens the work–family theory by integrating the relationship between work–family interfaces, organizational justice, occupational stress and organizational commitment. As none of the prior literature has studied the relationship among four factors in Vietnam, the results are expected to fulfil this gap.

This chapter provides information on the development of Vietnamese education under the influence of global forces based on the analysis of relevant education research and policies using Wolhuter’s frameworks. In the process of coming up with ways to develop education in the face of different influences of globalization, besides having reactions with patterns commonly found in countries around the world, Vietnam also has responses that reflect its own political, sociocultural and economic characteristics. The state still plays a controlling role in education at all levels and many culture-related features that have existed throughout the country’s history have hardly changed, namely aspects related to teachers, learners and teaching and learning methods. To sustain its education in the globalized era, Vietnam must make more efforts in various aspects such as the link between education and employment, the logic of education objectives, the feasibility and appropriateness of curricula, quality of education, especially of higher education and equality in education for underprivileged groups.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to develop a theoretical model for consumer behavioral intention by integrating the technology acceptance model (TAM) and the theory of perceived risk, which is tested on the intended use of credit cards in Vietnam.

Design/methodology/approach

The data were collected from 485 bank customers through a nationwide online survey. An exploratory and confirmatory factor analyzes were performed to validate the factor structure of the measurement items while structural equation modeling was used to validate the proposed model and testing the hypotheses.

Findings

The results of structural equation modeling reveal that perceived risk, perceived usefulness, social influence and perceived ease of use were significant determinants of consumer intention to use a credit card. Of them, only perceived risk discouraged the intended use of a credit card, which was synthesized from psychological, financial, performance, privacy, time, social and security risk.

Research limitations/implications

This study measured the first-order risk dimensions based on the payment function of the credit card only; these measurements missed potential losses relevant to credit function of credit cards.

Practical implications

This study can be beneficial to banks enacting policies to attract more consumers and to help decide how to allocate resources to retain and expand their customer base.

Originality/value

The study adds value to the literature on consumer behavior by confirming the impact of second-order perceived risk on the intended use of credit cards, which most previous studies have not demonstrated. The research also provides an empirical evidence to the academic research platform on e-banking services in Vietnam, especially related to the credit card industry.
