Abstract

This chapter looks at the approaches taken by Malaysian Islamic banks and the central Shariah body in assisting the financial consumers going through the COVID-19 pandemic economic distress in consequence of the Movement Control Order and the socially responsible investing (SRI) opportunity Malaysian government put up through the Sukuk Prihatin in order to rebuild the economy. It is found that through shariah principles of ta'awun (mutual assistance), Islamic finance, and with numerous Islamic jurisprudential approaches under the shariah could provide better solutions to overcome the economic hardship experienced due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The paper showcases the approaches taken in Malaysia relying on the Islamic finance landscape in overcoming the financial hardship suffered by the financial consumers due to COVID-19 pandemic and in rebuilding the economic through a unique mutual assist opportunity.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioural control, religiosity, knowledge and Shariah-compliance with intention to hold Shariah-compliant credit card (SCCC) amongst Muslims and non-Muslims.

Design/methodology/approach

Researchers used survey questionnaire to collect data and applied a purposive sampling method, then analyzing the data using descriptive statistics and also multi-group analysis of SmartPLS.

Findings

For Muslims, attitude, subjective norm, Shariah-compliance, knowledge and religiosity are positively significant. While for non-Muslims, only attitude and subjective norm are positively significant to intention to hold SCCCs.

Research limitations/implications

The behavioural study only focusses on intention to hold Islamic credit cards, which is constraining the extended model of the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) without the actual performance of the behaviour, which is holding SCCCs. Secondly, the research caters for a single method, namely, quantitative without including the qualitative method to better understand and explore other factors affecting consumers’ behavioural intention. The qualitative part can be carried out by conducting interviews with practitioners, regulators and customers. Thirdly, the cultural dimensions are not combined as parts of TPBs’ antecedents for extended model that could be affecting intention, as Malaysia has diverse ethnic groups with different religious background.

Practical implications

In terms of managerial implications, the findings will further assist financial service providers to develop more effective marketing strategies for Islamic financial products not just to cater for the Muslims but also the non-Muslims, who are increasingly attracted to Islamic banking. As many Muslims are still holding conventional credit cards, it is timely for the Islamic financial institutions to attract them with the SCCCs.

Social implications

Financial marketers are expected to be qualified and well-versed on the different Islamic product structures and also the conventional products. By having such enables them to enlighten and create awareness amongst the targeted consumers in seeking Shariah-compliant financial-related products.

Originality/value

The research will contribute to new theoretical knowledge of an extended behavioural model in relation to customers’ perception towards SCCCs’ acceptance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of addition Co nanoparticles on the characteristic properties of Sn‐3.8Ag‐0.7Cu solder.

Design/methodology/approach

Cobalt (Co) nanoparticles were added to Sn‐Ag‐Cu solders by thoroughly blending various weight percentages (0‐2.0 wt%) of Co nanoparticles with near eutectic SAC387 solder paste. Blending was done mechanically for 30 min to ensure a homogeneous mixture. The paste mixture was then reflowed on a hot plate at 250°C for 45 s. The melting points of nanocomposite solder were determined by differential scanning calorimetry. Spreading rate of nanocomposite was calculated following the JIS Z3198‐3 standard. The wetting angle was measured after cross‐sectional metallographic preparation.

Findings

No significant change in melting point of the solder was observed as a result of Co nanoparticle addition. The wetting angles of the solder increased with the addition of nanoparticles, while the spreading rate decreased. Although the wetting angle increased, the values were still within the acceptable range. Scanning micrograph observations revealed that the as‐solidified microstructure of the composite solder was altered by the addition of Co nanoparticles. Microhardness of the solders slightly increased upon Co nanoparticles addition to SAC387.

Originality/value

The paper demonstrates that a simple process like paste mixing can be used to incorporate nanoparticles into solder.

Abstract

Purpose

In electronic packaging, when solid copper comes in contact with liquid solder alloy, the former dissolves and intermetallic compounds (IMCs) form at the solid‐liquid interface. The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of the presence of molybdenum nanoparticles on the dissolution of copper and the formation of interfacial IMC.

Design/methodology/approach

Cu wire having a diameter of 250 μm is immersed in liquid composite solders at 250°C up to 15 min. Composite solder was prepared by adding various amount of Mo nanoparticles into the Sn‐3.8Ag‐0.7Cu (SAC) solder paste. The dissolution behavior of Cu substrate is studied for SAC and Mo nanoparticles added SAC solders. The IMCs and its microstructure between the solder and substrate are analyzed by using conventional scanning electron microscope (SEM) and field emission SEM. The elemental analysis was done by using energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy.

Findings

Generally, the dissolution of the substrate increases with increasing immersion time but decreases with the increase of the content of Mo nanoparticles in the solder. The IMC thickness increases with increasing the reaction time but Mo nanoparticles can hinder the growth of IMC layer. The presence of Mo nanoparticle is found to be effective in reducing the dissolution of copper into SAC solder.

Originality/value

The paper shows that molybdenum nanoparticles in liquid SAC solders have a prominent effect on the substrate dissolution rate and the interfacial IMC between the SAC solder and copper substrate.

An important sector that presents continuous growth year after year and one of the most notable economic sectors worldwide is hospitality and tourism (H&T). This study examines research and case studies about H&T entrepreneurship and provides new insights into the current industry about all aspects that affect entrepreneurship development. Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to establish a conceptual model adopted from a strategy-structure-performance paradigm for investigating the fit between the supply chain integration and halal food supply chain integrity and the impact of halal food supply chain integrity on firms’ performance in a Malaysian context.

Design/methodology/approach

This study comprises a sample of a halal manufacturing firm in Malaysia. A cross-sectional research design was used in this study. Data were gathered based on mailed and personally administered questionnaires. SmartPLS was used to analyse the 254 valid responses.

Findings

The research findings indicate that internal integration and strategy have positive impact on halal food supply chain integrity. The study results confirmed that customer integration and supplier integration contributes to halal food supply chain integrity. It also finds that halal food supply chain integrity has a significantly positive impact.

Research limitations/implications

The results suggested that a strategic collaboration with the supplier pivoted around the quality and integrity of the raw materials should be undertaken.

Practical implications

The results from this study supports that the managers should adopt all halal food supply chain integrity components to achieve a superior performance. Even though some of the components did not yield significant results in terms of their relationships with firms’ performance, these dimensions were generally related to the standardised industry requirements, such as certifications.

Originality/value

The findings are original and unique and are based on established theories from the literature on supply chain management practices. The research findings are useful to academics and policymakers interested in fostering a halal supply chain in Malaysia.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to attempt to investigate the factors that influence non-Muslims’ withdrawal behavioural intention from Islamic banking in Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

The push–pull–mooring approach is used to examine the determinants of withdrawal intention by non-Muslims from Islamic banking in Malaysia. Variables used in this study include religiosity (RELG) under push, deposit guarantee (DG), rate of return (RR), Islamic banks’ specific factors (IBSF) under pull and mooring factors as social influence (SI) and voluntary switching (VS) as the determinants of withdrawal intention from Islamic banking. In this study, the SPSS Statistics Version 22 and smart partial least squares were used to measure the withdrawal level.

Findings

Three variables, namely, SI, RR and IBSF are found to significantly influence the withdrawal behaviour intention. Meanwhile, three other variables, namely, RELG, DG and VS are not significant.

Practical implications

This study provides valuable insights pertaining to non-Muslim consumer withdrawal behaviour from Islamic banks. Bank managers, marketers and regulators could use these findings in developing effective strategies to increase and retain customer withdrawal.

Originality/value

This study expands the understanding of key determinants of the non-Muslim withdrawal behaviour from Islamic banks in Malaysia. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this research is among the pioneer empirical study to assess the issue.

Abstract

Purpose

The increasing number of tourists in the Muslim world every year has encouraged digital business developers and the Sharia banking industry to integrate halal product and service apps with the Sharia mobile banking system. The fourth wave of the industrial revolution has changed the consumer paradigm, creating a young generation that uses digital service transaction systems in their daily lives. This paper aims to investigate the factors that determine intention to use halal tourism apps amongst Muslim tourists to provide insights promoting the development of halal tourism in Indonesia.

Design/methodology/approach

The research was conducted using an online survey approach. The sample comprised 205 Muslim Millennial and Generation Z travellers. The data collected were analysed using partial least square structural equation modelling. There were three analysis stages: evaluation of the measurement model, assessment of the structural model and hypothesis testing.

Findings

The findings indicated that trust mediated the relationship between perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness on individual intentions and that halal knowledge positively and significantly impacted individual intentions. In contrast, religiosity was not a significant influence on individual intentions.

Originality/value

The paper expanded the technology acceptance model by incorporating the key constructs of halal knowledge, religiosity and trust into an integrated research framework; this represented a novel step, especially in the context of halal tourism. The finding that trust mediated the relationship between perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness fills a gap in previous research, which has rarely included the trust construct in technology acceptance models.
