Abstract

Purpose — The main objective of this survey is to collect data for the development of six models in a freight modeling framework. The framework aims to simulate the interactions between shippers and carriers in a freight market.

Methodology/approach — A web-based survey was designed using stated preference methods and experimental auctions, to collect information about shipper and carrier behavior when facing hypothetical situations. Hypothetical situations were constructed using information collected during the survey.

Findings — The modeling results are available for one model, the carrier selection model. In this model, data were collected using stated preference (SP) methods. Nine SP designs were developed using D-designs and an approach to minimize the nonattendance problem. A multinomial probit model was used. No bias was found due to the position of alternatives on the screen, signs of the parameters are as expected, and level of service attributes are relevant in the carrier selection process.

Research limitations/implications — The final response rate was small (about 9%) which is not uncommon in surveys with freight managers. This response rate might result in nonresponse bias of the estimates, which is the subject of future research.

Practical implications — Since freight transport is the output of a freight market, the application of the freight modeling framework presented in this chapter has potential to improve forecasts of freight flows.

Originality/value of chapter — To the best of our knowledge, the survey presented in this chapter consists of an innovative data collection procedure for the development of an original freight modeling framework.

Abstract

Health scientists and urban planners have long been interested in the influence that the built environment has on the physical activities in which we engage, the environmental hazards we face, the kinds of amenities we enjoy, and the resulting impacts on our health. However, it is widely recognized that the extent of this influence, and the specific cause-and-effect relationships that exist, are still relatively unclear. Recent reviews highlight the need for more individual-level data on daily activities (especially physical activity) over long periods of time linked spatially to real-world characteristics of the built environment in diverse settings, along with a wide range of personal mediating variables. While capturing objective data on the built environment has benefited from wide-scale availability of detailed land use and transport network databases, the same cannot be said of human activity. A more diverse history of data collection methods exists for such activity and continues to evolve owing to a variety of quickly emerging wearable sensor technologies. At present, no “gold standard” method has emerged for assessing physical activity type and intensity under the real-world conditions of the built environment; in fact, most methods have barely been tested outside of the laboratory, and those that have tend to experience significant drops in accuracy and reliability. This paper provides a review of these diverse methods and emerging technologies, including biochemical, self-report, direct observation, passive motion detection, and integrated approaches. Based on this review and current needs, an integrated three-tiered methodology is proposed, including: (1) passive location tracking (e.g., using global positioning systems); (2) passive motion/biometric tracking (e.g., using accelerometers); and (3) limited self-reporting (e.g., using prompted recall diaries). Key development issues are highlighted, including the need for proper validation and automated activity-detection algorithms. The paper ends with a look at some of the key lessons learned and new opportunities that have emerged at the crossroads of urban studies and health sciences.

Abstract

Sustainable development is generally a difficult concept to explore in an educational setting. Those attempting to teach it require the inter- and transdisciplinary skills to be able to foster in the students not only the knowledge assimilation but also the deep acquisition of values (Faham, Rezvanfar, Mohammadi, & Nohooji, 2017; Lambrechts, Mulà, Ceulemans, Molderez, & Gaeremynck, 2013). Sustainable education is embedded in the curriculum of Food Technology students throughout their four-year degree at Harper Adams University. In this chapter, a brief description of how the curricula are organized is presented. Emphasis is given to one module in the final year of the degree where the content and pedagogical practice as well as the pedagogic nature of the learning environment is analyzed in the light of the literature. The teaching and learning practices developed, and the extent to which they equip the students with skills such as critical thinking, analysis, reflection, and complex problem solving is explored. Two case studies are presented, namely the Loess Plateau (China) and the Chiapas Coffee Farmers (Mexico). These serve to contextualize the extent that students can draw from teaching and learning strategies in the module as well as other experiences (personal or from other modules) and use these to frame the students’ learning.
