Abstract

Geographical mobility is often considered fundamental to a well-functioning labour market, and thus to the economy as a whole. Typically, geographical mobility can be achieved either through commuting or through migration. Commuting can be considered important for households to have access to job market opportunities and for business to access labour, skills and competencies. Previous research has found commuting patterns to differ between men and women, for example, in the sense that women travel shorter distances and rely more on public transport. However, we also know that factors such as higher education can influence an individual’s decision to commute, possibly because of specialization and a higher salary. As women’s education level approaches, or surpasses, that of men’s, one would expect to see more similarities between the travel behaviour of the two genders. In this study, we analyse gender patterns of commuting in Norway, Serbia and Sweden. We specifically address the issue of gender gap in commuting. Findings show that though there are signs of convergence, there are large regional variations. The gender gap is decreasing primarily in the more urban regions, while it is decreasing less, and even increasing, given the various levels of aggregation, in the more rural areas.

Abstract

Purpose

Hedonic models are commonly used in housing markets studies to obtain quantitative measures of various implicit prices. The use of panel data in other fields of research has proved to be valuable when accounting for unobserved heterogeneity. Given that houses are extremely heterogeneous, and given that it is impossible to include all relevant attributes in hedonic models, removing unobserved heterogeneity by basic panel data models sounds appealing. This paper seeks to compare results between models that use pooled cross section data and panel data. The main research question is whether the pooled model gives unbiased estimates on some basic implicit prices.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper applies the hedonic methodology. It uses regression analysis and estimate basic and parsimonious models that use either pooled time series and cross section data or panel data. The empirical results when using the two different approaches are compared.

Findings

The paper illustrates that the results from the pooled timeseries and cross section model could be biased for some basic implicit prices. With some nuances, it is illustrated that in specific situations the use of a basic panel data estimator could be a simple solution to the problem of misspecification due to omitted, time‐invariant explanatory variables.

Research limitations/implications

Most of the included variables do not change over time, however. In these cases potential bias using a basic fixed effects approach could not be checked for. It is also problematic that the variation in some of the time‐varying variables is not reliable and small. Finally, there could be a problem with sample selection bias. This may limit the usefulness of using panel data in disaggregated hedonic house price studies.

Originality/value

Hedonic house price models are frequently used in housing market research. It is therefore important to study in various ways whether the traditional approaches provide unbiased results. In this paper models that use panel data are compared to models that use more traditional time series and cross section data. To the author's knowledge, this approach has not been followed before.

Abstract

Whereas most societal commentators continue to review the historical patterns of men’s leadership in search of models for 21st-century success, few have begun to recognize, let alone appreciate, the equivalent patterns of women’s leadership and the future contributions that women could potentially make as leaders. What could and are women bringing to society as global leaders? Why at this moment in history is there such a marked increase in the number of women leaders? Are we entering an era in which both male and female leaders will shape history, both symbolically and in reality? And if so, will we discover that women, on average, lead in different ways than men, or will we learn that role (global leader) explains more than gender? This chapter reveals the accelerating trends of women joining men in senior leadership positions, establishes the relationship of women leaders to our overall understanding of global leadership, and sets forth an agenda to accomplish much needed research and understanding.

Outlines the main features of each industry and the environment in which it is operating. Provides examples, insights and quotes from Chief Executive Officers, managers and employees on their organization’s recipe for success. Mentions the effect technology has had in some industries. Talks about skilled and semi‐skilled workers, worker empowerment and the formation of teams. Addresses also the issue of change and the training that is required to deal with it in different industry sectors. Discusses remuneration packages and incentives offered to motivate employees. Notes the importance of customers in the face of increased competition. Abstract

This article takes stock of the state of cross‐cultural management in Malaysia. It first focuses on a number of problems that cross‐cultural management faces generally, namely the lack of integrated knowledge and the possibility of subjectivity influencing the research design. Then the article looks at the state of cross‐cultural management research in Malaysia. It concludes that cross‐cultural management in Malaysia is, as yet, a series of “snapshots” with little follow‐up. Lastly, a number of themes for future research in Malaysia are proposed.
