Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the impact of job burnout on job satisfaction and the intention to change occupation within the accounting profession. It also examines the mediating role of psychological well-being.

Design/methodology/approach

A descriptive research design was used in this study. Survey data were physically collected from 230 accounting employees in the private sector. Structural equation modeling was used to test the theoretical model.

Findings

The results showed that job burnout significantly affects psychological well-being and that psychological well-being significantly mediates the relationship between job burnout and job satisfaction, as well as between job burnout and the intention to change occupation.

Research limitations/implications

This study has significant implications for accounting organizations, suggesting the adoption of strategies to promote psychological well-being. These initiatives have the potential to enhance job satisfaction and reduce accountants’ intention to change their profession.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the existing literature by highlighting the mediating role of psychological well-being in linking job burnout with job satisfaction and the intention to change occupation among accounting professionals.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the relationship between high-commitment human resource management (HCHRM) practices and emigration intentions in a developing country context. It further examines the mediating roles of perceived organizational support (POS) and job satisfaction in this relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the survey method, data were collected online from 407 employees. Structural equation modeling (SEM) in Amos v. 23 was conducted to scrutinize the structural relationships among the variables.

Findings

The study revealed that HCHRM practices do not directly impact emigration intentions. However, they do significantly influence POS, which, in turn, has a positive effect on job satisfaction. Consequently, HCHRM practices indirectly affect emigration intentions through the serial mediation of POS and job satisfaction.

Research limitations/implications

While this study provides valuable insights into the intricate dynamics of HCHRM practices, organizational support, job satisfaction and emigration intentions, it has certain limitations, such as its specific focus on Kosovo and its reliance on cross-sectional data. Future research could explore these relationships in diverse settings and use longitudinal designs for a more profound understanding.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study represents the first empirical investigation into the connection between HCHRM practices and emigration intentions within a developing country context. It underscores the significance of considering not only specific HRM practices but also broader contextual factors and mediating mechanisms, shedding light on how HCHRM practices influence employee intentions to emigrate. The findings provide a unique perspective for organizations and policymakers dealing with emigration challenges in developing countries.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the impact of emotional intelligence on work engagement by exploring the mediating roles of self-efficacy and psychological empowerment in this relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the survey method, data were collected through both physical and online means. The final sample comprised 304 teachers working in elementary, middle and high schools. Structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis, utilizing IBM Amos version 26, was employed to assess the hypothesized model.

Findings

The study's results revealed that emotional intelligence does not exert a direct impact on work engagement. Additionally, self-efficacy was not found to mediate the relationship between emotional intelligence and work engagement. However, psychological empowerment emerged as a mediating factor in this context. Furthermore, self-efficacy and psychological empowerment concurrently demonstrated significant mediation of the relationship between emotional intelligence and work engagement.

Research limitations/implications

The findings underscore the significance of teachers' emotional intelligence, suggesting that it can have profound implications for their work engagement through the mediating mechanisms of self-efficacy and psychological empowerment. Educational principals and administrators are encouraged to prioritize the enhancement of teachers' psychological empowerment, recognizing it as a pivotal link between teachers' emotional intelligence and work engagement.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the field by comprehensively examining the mediating roles of self-efficacy and psychological empowerment, addressing prior empirical gaps, and enriching the understanding of how emotional intelligence influences work engagement within the educational sphere.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the relationship between high commitment human resource management (HCHRM) practices and employee well-being in the food service industry, with a focus on the mediating roles of job demands and psychological conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was conducted among 296 frontline employees in the food service industry, and the data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) in AMOS ver26.

Findings

The results showed that HCHRM practices do not directly affect employee well-being. However, psychological conditions play a crucial role in mediating the relationship between HCHRM practices and employee well-being. Specifically, the psychological conditions of meaningfulness and availability significantly predicted work engagement and mediated the relationship between HCHRM practices and employee well-being. On the other hand, job demands did not mediate the relationship between HCHRM practices and employee well-being.

Research limitations/implications

Although the study addressed common method variance, the cross-sectional nature of the data limits the ability to infer causal relationships among variables. Future studies could adopt a longitudinal research design to investigate the causal relationships among variables. In addition, the study recommends that managers in the food service industry adopt HCHRM practices and provide necessary psychological conditions to promote employee well-being.

Originality/value

This study extends the current literature on HCHRM and employee well-being in the food service industry by providing new insights into the mediating role of psychological conditions. The findings suggest that HCHRM practices can indirectly promote employee well-being through the enhancement of psychological conditions. These insights could help managers in the food service industry to design effective HRM strategies that foster employee well-being and reduce turnover.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the relationship between emotional intelligence, self-efficacy and organizational commitment, focusing on the mediating role of self-efficacy in the relationship between emotional intelligence and organizational commitment.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors used an online survey to collect data for this purpose. The sample consisted of 145 employees of different organizations in Kosovo. To test the hypothetical model, a mediation analysis was conducted using PROCESS Model Type 4.

Findings

The results show that emotional intelligence is positively related to self-efficacy and that self-efficacy is positively related to organizational commitment. Furthermore, the results of the mediation analysis confirm that the relationship between emotional intelligence and organizational commitment is mediated by self-efficacy.

Research limitations/implications

For future research, the authors recommend using the sub-dimensions of the above variables to test this model, and multiple models could be formulated. At the same time, the survey can be applied to managers to examine their emotional intelligence and to determine whether emotional intelligence influences their organizational commitment through self-efficacy. Consistent with the findings of this study, managers and executives in organizations should consider the emotional intelligence of their employees and that the employees with higher emotional intelligence have higher self-efficacy and can perform better.

Originality/value

This study extends the current literature in organizational behavior and provides a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between emotional intelligence, self-efficacy and organizational commitment. This study was also conducted in a developing country context, which can always lead to different results than studies conducted in developed countries.
