Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to recognize the role of information system (IS) model on young adults’ experience of housing and real estate chatbots. This model of IS takes into account the quality of information, the quality of system and the quality of service.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a sample frame for analysis which comprises young adult population in India, i.e. between the ages of 18 and 35. A questionnaire consisting of five components was used to collect information in a structured manner. The 386 responses thus collected were analysed using the structural equation model.

Findings

It was found that there is a significant influence of the quality of information, quality of system and quality of service on young adults’ experience of housing and real estate chatbots. The findings also showed that there is moderation role of effort expectancy between the quality parameters and young adults’ user experience of housing and real estate chatbots.

Research limitations/implications

This study focusses exclusively on the young adults from various parts of India. Future research can consider larger population categories across age groups and across sectors employing chatbots.

Practical implications

This study will enable in-depth understanding of IS model – quality dimensions’ relation with the user experience. In particular, housing and real estate organisations will profit from the expanded usage of artificial intelligence through chatbots for user correspondence and communication.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is first of its kind, as it investigates how IS model – quality dimensions affect the young adults’ experience of housing and real estate chatbots in India. This study also ventures into identifying the moderation role of effort expectancy between the quality dimensions as per IS model and young adults’ experience of housing and real estate chatbots. This study will be useful for the stakeholders of housing and real estate industry.

Abstract

Purpose

A common observation made when computing chemically reacting flows is how central processing unit (CPU)-intensive these are in comparison to cold flow cases. The update of tens or hundreds of species with hundreds or thousands of reactions can easily consume more than 95% of the total CPU time. In many cases, the region where reactions (combustion) are actually taking place comprises only a very small percentage of the volume. Typical examples are flame fronts propagating through a domain. In such cases, only a small fraction of points/cells needs a full chemistry update. This leads to extreme load imbalances on parallel machines. The purpose of the present work is to develop a methodology to balance the work in an optimal way.

Design/methodology/approach

Points that require a full chemistry update are identified, gathered and distributed across the network, so that work is evenly distributed. Once the chemistry has been updated, the unknowns are gathered back.

Findings

The procedure has been found to work extremely well, leading to optimal load balance with insignificant communication overheads.

Research limitations/implications

In many production runs, the procedure leads to a reduction in CPU requirements of more than an order of magnitude. This allows much larger and longer runs, improving accuracy and statistics.

Practical implications

The procedure has allowed the calculation of chemically reacting flow cases that were hitherto not possible.

Originality/value

To the authors’ knowledge, this type of load balancing has not been published before.

Abstract

Purpose

Despite the huge financial resources associated with oil, Nigeria has consistently recorded poor growth performance. Therefore, this study aims to examine how corruption and oil rent influence Nigeria’s economic performance during the 1996–2021 period.

Design/methodology/approach

Various estimation techniques were used. These include the bootstrap autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds-testing, dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS), the fully modified OLS (FMOLS) and the canonical cointegration regression (CCR) estimators and the Toda–Yamamoto causality.

Findings

The bounds testing results provide evidence of a cointegrating relationship between the variables. In addition, the results of the ARDL, DOLS, CCR and FMOLS estimators demonstrate that oil rent and corruption have a significant positive impact on growth. Further, the results indicate that human capital and financial development enhance economic growth, whereas domestic investment and unemployment rates slow down long-term growth. Additionally, the causality test results illustrate the presence of a one-way causality from oil rent to economic growth and a bi-directional causal relationship between corruption and economic growth.

Originality/value

Existing studies focused on the effects of either oil rent or corruption on growth in Nigeria. Little attention has been paid to the exploration of how the rent from oil and the pervasiveness of corruption contribute to the performance of the Nigerian economy. Based on the outcome of this study, strategies and policies geared towards reducing oil dependence and the pervasiveness of corruption, enhancing human capital and financial development and reducing unemployment are recommended.

Abstract

Purpose

Despite the vulnerability of rapidly developing and emerging market economies, researchers have paid less attention to the determination of the size of money laundering (ML) in these economies, including the United Arab Emirates (the UAE). Therefore, this paper aims to estimate the magnitude of ML in the UAE between 1975 and 2020 based on the currency demand approach (CDA).

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses the Gregory–Hansen cointegration technique alongside the autoregressive distributed lag bounds testing procedure to estimate the CDA model.

Findings

The results illustrate that an amount equivalent to about 19.034% of the GDP is laundered in the UAE between 1975 and 2020, on average, with the value lying between 15.129% and 23.121%. In addition, the results demonstrate the importance of the real estate market, gold trade, remittance channels and the size of the underground economy in facilitating the laundering of illicit funds in the country.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the study is the pioneering attempt at estimating the amount of illicit funds laundered in the UAE. Besides, the adoption of a novel, yet robust, approach based on the modification of the CDA technique also sets the study apart as it ensures a correct, clear, unambiguous and indisputable estimate of the magnitude of ML is obtained. In addition, it is expected that the outcome of the study will expand the frontiers of knowledge among policy makers and relevant agencies and ensure the adoption of the most efficient and effective measures to curb the ML menace in the country.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to evaluate blast loads on and the response of submerged structures.

Design/methodology/approach

An arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian method is developed to model fluid–structure interaction (FSI) problems of close-in underwater explosions (UNDEX). The “fluid” part provides the loads for the structure considers air, water and high explosive materials. The spatial discretization for the fluid domain is performed with a second-order vertex-based finite volume scheme with a tangent of hyperbola interface capturing technique. The temporal discretization is based on explicit Runge–Kutta methods. The structure is described by a large-deformation Lagrangian formulation and discretized via finite elements. First, one-dimensional test cases are given to show that the numerical method is free of mesh movement effects. Thereafter, three-dimensional FSI problems of close-in UNDEX are studied. Finally, the computation of UNDEX near a ship compartment is performed.

Findings

The difference in the flow mechanisms between rigid targets and deforming targets is quantified and evaluated.

Research limitations/implications

Cavitation is modeled only approximately and may require further refinement/modeling.

Practical implications

The results demonstrate that the proposed numerical method is accurate, robust and versatile for practical use.

Social implications

Better design of naval infrastructure [such as bridges, ports, etc.].

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study has been conducted for the first time.

This paper presents a definition of mobile working. The paper looks at mobile and remote working and then the benefits are of these forms of working. It also outlines the limitations of mobile and remote working. The paper goes on to detail the type of mobile working used by Connexions (an organisation that formerly titled the Tyne and Wear Careers Service) what hardware and software are used by the company and how it is used. The paper concludes by identifying what the future holds for Connexions with this form of working. It argues that the staff expectations are not fully met by the technology now available.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether ethnic discrimination is present in the Russian labor market and whether it has a significant economic effect on the potential salaries of applicants.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected using a correspondence audit for four experimental male applicants with identical professional and personal characteristics while differing only in applicant name as a signal of applicants' ethnic background. Implied ethnicities include Russians, Armenians, Jews and North Caucasians. Résumés were sent out to 800 real unique vacancies on behalf of the experimental applicants with a geographic focus on the capital Moscow.

Findings

The results of the analysis suggest that there is a significant difference in treatment in both response rate and potential average salaries on ethnic grounds. Disadvantaged groups were found to be systematically pushed into jobs paying 15% less monthly wage.

Originality/value

The study investigates the existence of ethnic discrimination in the Russian labor market and furthermore economically quantifies the effects of discrimination.
