Abstract

The goal of this work is to include the new economic-based approaches related to entrepreneurship that have been published in the literature. Based on the neoclassical and Austrian schools, some sociological, psychological and economic theories about entrepreneurship. In this work, some unknown economic-based approaches related to entrepreneurship will be summarized, as they are included in the work of Saiz-Alvarez and García-Vaquero (2017). These approaches are: (1) The Jack-of-all-trades Theory, (2) The Mezzanine Theory, (3) The O-Ring Theory, (4) The Theory of Resources and Capabilities, (5) Entrepreneurial Bricolage, (6) The Processes’ School, (7) The Feedback Loop Theory, (8) The Theory of Effectuation, and (9) The Theory of the Optimal Triangle. All these theories will be summarized in this chapter.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to propose a causal relationship between the level of students’ human flourishing (HF) and their entrepreneurial intention (EI) and the mediation role of entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE).

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses a sample of 5,035 first-year university students who graduated from 950 different upper secondary schools in Mexico and abroad. Data were analysed using structural equation modelling.

Findings

The results reveal that HF increases EI and ESE; ESE positively impacts EI; and the student’s ESE partially mediates the HF-EI relationship.

Practical implications

These findings may improve educational strategies in upper secondary schools and higher education institutions’ management programmes to impact graduates’ HF and EI. To the knowledge, the authors are the first to measure how HF in upper secondary school graduates contributes to increasing their EI.

Social implications

Recommendations are made to increase Latin American students’ HF and EI.

Originality/value

The authors propose an inverse relationship between HF and EI, as HF can be enhanced in upper secondary education to boost EI later in students’ lives.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this paper is to propose new management techniques applied to Colombian entrepreneurs in displacement situation (EDS) based on education, solidarity, financial aid and social inclusion programs.

Design/methodology/approach

The empirical study was conducted between March and September 2010 with a mixture of 92 direct interviews using Alfa Ti, and Delphi surveys to 92 entrepreneurs, of whom 46 were EDS. In order to distinguish between entrepreneurs and EDS, three methodologies were applied: classification into two phases; hierarchical classification (dendrograms); and K‐averages classification. Results were different for the three analyses, although they do have similarities (three clusters of outliers).

Findings

The main findings are: distinction among opportunity effect, need effect and survival effect; conceptualization, characterization and classification of EDS; distinction between entrepreneurs and EDS; design of the “five Cs” pentagon; elaboration of the pyramid of micro‐corporate success for EDS.

Originality/value

To date there is no theoretical model to develop administrative skills for EDS to carry out change management in third world countries with social conflicts.
