Abstract

The Canadian healthcare system is recognized as one of the best health systems in the world. However, recent social and economic conditions have placed significant pressure on system administrators to demonstrate value-for-money for the investments made with an increased scrutiny on service delivery and cost structures. Challenges in providing more efficient healthcare often resonate two key constraints: the shortage of overall funding and barriers to accessing appropriate service providers in a timely fashion. The most common solution is simply to increase service provider manpower and invest further financial resources.

In Ontario, Canada’s largest province, The Shoulder Centre (TSC) has introduced a transformative solution to address system constraints through the development of an innovative and comprehensive model of care which builds on (1) novel partnerships between community providers and the Centre’s clinical team, (2) A Patient-Centered Specialty Practice (PCSP) and (3) Leveraging technology solutions.

TSC’s model of care suggests that many challenges in healthcare are attributed to the inappropriate management of human capital and the under-development of social capital. As a solution, TSC has transformed the organizational structure of its health services by converting service providers into partners with shared accountabilities, resulting in economic value through human capital optimization and improved system efficiencies through the building of social capital. TSC’s performance results demonstrate measured system savings, increased patient and provider satisfaction, targeted knowledge growth and confirms that the healthcare system contains a greater than expected abundance of human and financial resources to provide access to appropriate and timely care without any further system investment.

Where are the ultimate sources of technological breakthroughs? What makes a firm more likely to invent a breakthrough or to exploit external breakthroughs? We develop an evolutionary model of invention as a process of recombinant variation and selection. Our contributions are to highlight the skewed outcome distributions resulting from evolutionary search and to develop theory that can be tested by modeling the higher moments of search processes. Recent methodological and data collection advances make such testing possible. We motivate further research, develop our model's strategic implications, and discuss how managers might create and respond to breakthroughs.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the relationships between gender, gender identity and Word of Mouth (WOM). There are three objectives of this study. The first was to observe the impact of gender identity on WOM. The second was to examine the mediation role of self-brand connection (SBC) bridging the relationship between gender identity and WOM. The final one was to test the moderating role of gender.

Design/methodology/approach

The conceptual model was tested by analyzing data collected via Mturk from Americans participants who use Airbnb. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to evaluate the psychometric property. To test hypotheses, the structural equation model was assessed. Further, Hayes’ PROCESS was adopted to examine the mediation role of SBC. The moderation role of gender was examined by the chi-square difference test.

Findings

The research outcomes elucidated that feminine gender identity exerted a noteworthy influence on WOM communication, whereas masculine gender identity appeared to bear no significant impact on WOM. It was determined that SBC operates as a potent mediator bridging the relationship between gender identity and WOM. Gender did not demonstrate a significant moderating effect on any part of the WOM communication pathway in the context of this study.

Practical implications

The conclusions drawn from this research underscore that practitioners in the field of brand management should not overlook the crucial role of consumers' gender identity. It is imperative to cultivate robust, positive relationships with consumers as a strategic measure to engender favorable WOM communication.

Originality/value

This investigation distinguishes itself as one of the relatively scarce studies interrogating the relationship between gender identity, gender and WOM, specifically through the mediating lens of SBC. Consequently, the discoveries made herein have the potential to furnish unprecedented insights into comprehending consumer behavior in the hospitality industry with respect to WOM communication, particularly as it pertains to the dimension of gender identity.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine best practices that contribute to the effectiveness of benchmarking in Indonesian manufacturing industries.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 250 questionnaires are distributed to representatives of the Badan Pengelola Industri Strategis (BPIS) registered companies, specifically to the quality managers or production managers that are involved in the benchmarking process in companies.

Findings

In total, 155 responded to the questionnaire; that gives a response rate of 51.67 percent. Analysis of the data has shown that some benchmarking practices, e.g. the manufacturing process, and organizational and environmental factors do significantly influence the effectiveness of benchmarking.

Research limitations/implications

Further study needs to be undertaken to identify other best practices of benchmarking. A further limitation of the study is that the survey items are based on the literature review.

Practical implications

A government body such as a benchmarking department (BPIS) can therefore focus on these factors for further development of benchmarking. BPIS Indonesia can organize more training and seminars for smaller manufacturing companies. From an organizational point of view, attention should be given to improving compatibility, employee innovativeness, and government intervention so that the best practices of benchmarking can be used proactively as a strategic tool.

Originality/value

From the findings of this paper, in order for the benchmarking process to be successful, an organization needs these general requirements: top management commitment and support: a solid understanding of the manufacturing operations and requirements for improvement: willingness to share information with benchmarking partners; and dedication to ongoing benchmarking efforts.

Abstract

Purpose

Blockchain technology offers numerous venues for supply chain applications and research. However, the connections between specific blockchain features and future applications have been unclear to date in its evolution. The purpose of this study is to fill this void.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors advance the understanding of blockchain in supply chain management by providing a new research framework built on unique blockchain features as applied across core supply chain functions.

Findings

This study’s framework is a feature-function matrix that integrates four overarching supply chain functions (i.e. supplier management, logistics, production processes and customer management) with nine blockchain features (i.e. traceability/provenance, accessibility, visibility, immutability, distributed/shared ledger, validity, peer-to-peer transacting, pseudonymity and programmability). This study’s feature-function framework is supported by a structured, systematic review of reviews using PRISMA methods. The authors use the framework to present a future blockchain research agenda in supply chain management.

Originality/value

The authors provide a new blockchain feature/supply chain function framework and provide a structured path for future research.

Abstract

Purpose

Organisational learning plays a critical role for firms to keep abreast of a supply chain environment filled with volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA). This study investigates the extent to which supply chain learning (SCL) affects operational resilience under such circumstances.

Design/methodology/approach

This study developed a research framework and underlying hypotheses based on SCL and information processing theory (IPT). An empirical test was carried out using secondary data derived from the “Supply Chain Policy” launched by the Chinese government and two large related conferences.

Findings

SCL positively relates to operational resilience, and several moderators influence the relationship between them. The authors argue that digital-technological diversity could weaken the role of SCL in operational resilience, whereas customer concentration, and participating in a pilot programme could enhance the effect of SCL.

Practical implications

Firms should embrace the power of SCL in building resilience in the VUCA era. Meanwhile, they should be cautious of a digital-technological diversification strategy, appraise the customer base profile and proactively engage in pilot programmes.

Originality/value

This research develops the SCL construct further in the context of China and empirically measures its power on operational resilience using a unique dataset. This contributes to the theorisation of SCL.
