Abstract

Today, the demand for renewable energy investments is increasing due to the increase in the world population and the rapid depletion of resources. Renewable energy investments are seen as an area that requires more technical knowledge and experience than nonrenewable energy investments. For this reason, qualified workforce is important in this field. The aim of our study is to reveal the criteria by which renewable energy investments are effective on qualified labor supply. According to the results of our study, in which the analytic hierarchy process method was used, the criterion with the highest weight was determined as “harmonizing universities with undergraduate and graduate level education and internship opportunities.” When this criterion is taken into account, the implementation of policies toward university education in this field together with the renewable energy investments of the countries will positively affect the qualified labor supply.

Abstract

Today, the need for renewable energy is rising steadily. Various steps are being taken by nations to address the rising need. The developments occurring in proportion to the industrial structures and economic levels of the countries, these efforts, the political structure of the country, some established patterns from the past, and many other external factors affect the use of renewable energy and therefore sustainable development, which has been one of the most important agendas since the early 1990s. In this study, it is examined whether certain characteristics of the Scandinavian Welfare Model affect the background of this successful image of Finland, Denmark, and Sweden, which rank in the top three positions in both the Global Energy Innovation Index and the Sustainable Development Report. As a result, although the use of fossil fuels increases the ecological footprint in the Scandinavian countries, which are evaluated as in the rest of the world, continuing the principles of innovation, trust, equality, openness, and sustainability with determination, the Nordic approach has not departed from the welfare state principle compatible with its own codes, unlike the transformations experienced by other welfare regimes, and has become a distinctive factor.

Abstract

Purpose

The retail sector has the largest energy consumption among commercial buildings in the U.S. Although previous studies explored benefits, barriers and solutions for implementing sustainability in various building sectors, research focused on retail facilities has been very scarce. This study aims to explore U.S. facilities managers’ perceptions of barriers that prevented the implementation of energy-efficiency practices in the retail sector. Their perceptions were compared by facility size and facilities management company’s business revenue.

Design/methodology/approach

An online survey was distributed to the members of the International Facility Management Association and the author's LinkedIn network. The survey responses were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis and ANOVA.

Findings

Managers from large facilities, as opposed to those from small ones, significantly more agreed that the unavailability of building automation systems, a lack of professional writing skills and a lack of awareness of life cycle cost (LCC) were the barriers. Business revenue did not cause significantly different perceptions of the barriers except for a lack of awareness of LCC and a lack of support from upper management.

Originality/value

This study fills the research gap on energy efficiency in the retail sector by revealing U.S. facilities managers’ perceptions of the barriers to the implementation of energy-efficiency practices in retail stores. This novel study compares perceptions of the facilities managers by facility size and business revenue; this comparison has not been performed before. The study also identified several new barriers to the implementation of energy efficiency in the retail sector.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the relevance of each variable such as brand attitude, brand awareness, brand visibility (BV), brand integrity (BI), brand reputation and brand performance through direct and intervening testing, so that the research has theoretical implications for the development of modern marketing science while having managerial implications for Apple product companies through model development what has been done by Pantea Foroudi.

Design/methodology/approach

This research is the development of Pantea Foroudi’s research. The original side of this study adds BI variables and BV as an intervening variable. The research analysis method uses partial least square, which is the process with Smart-PLS Software. The sampling method uses purposive random sampling with data collection using e-survey. This study also involved 395 samples of apple product brands in Makassar, Indonesia. This research was conduct from March to October 2018.

Findings

The 14 line analysis that the authors submitted, both tests were carried out directly or intervening. A total of 11 predictions stated significant influence while BV and brand awareness did not affect the brand reputation. Brand awareness also does not affect brand performance by making brand reputation an intervening variable.

Originality/value

The original side of the research adds a variable that is considered very important, namely, BI and BV.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a food supply chain (SC) integrity framework in the context of halal food.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper provides a discussion on the development of food SC integrity framework using triangulation of interviews’ insights with literature.

Findings

Current industry practices such as standards have not been sufficient in embracing the concept of food SC integrity. As the food SC is complex, food SC integrity framework is proposed as a solution. This paper proposes food SC integrity framework for halal food. It consists of four dimensions, namely: raw material, production, service, and information integrity. In addition, key elements for each dimension are derived from the interviews’ insights.

Research limitations/implications

The framework provides the evidence that the safeguarding of halal food integrity does not rely solely on certification; but it requires an extensive effort beyond certification.

Practical implications

Safeguarding of food integrity should involve all stages and actors of the SC. Religious standards should incorporate SC integrity profiling through a controlling mechanism to promote higher food product integrity.

Originality/value

Food SC integrity framework is important to religious food as it plays a significant role to the population. This study contributes to a newly developed SC integrity framework in the context of halal food.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to establish a conceptual model adopted from a strategy-structure-performance paradigm for investigating the fit between the supply chain integration and halal food supply chain integrity and the impact of halal food supply chain integrity on firms’ performance in a Malaysian context.

Design/methodology/approach

This study comprises a sample of a halal manufacturing firm in Malaysia. A cross-sectional research design was used in this study. Data were gathered based on mailed and personally administered questionnaires. SmartPLS was used to analyse the 254 valid responses.

Findings

The research findings indicate that internal integration and strategy have positive impact on halal food supply chain integrity. The study results confirmed that customer integration and supplier integration contributes to halal food supply chain integrity. It also finds that halal food supply chain integrity has a significantly positive impact.

Research limitations/implications

The results suggested that a strategic collaboration with the supplier pivoted around the quality and integrity of the raw materials should be undertaken.

Practical implications

The results from this study supports that the managers should adopt all halal food supply chain integrity components to achieve a superior performance. Even though some of the components did not yield significant results in terms of their relationships with firms’ performance, these dimensions were generally related to the standardised industry requirements, such as certifications.

Originality/value

The findings are original and unique and are based on established theories from the literature on supply chain management practices. The research findings are useful to academics and policymakers interested in fostering a halal supply chain in Malaysia.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to propose an extended model of technology acceptance model (TAM) in the use of financial technology (Fintech) in the context of Islamic philanthropy, especially by studying and exploring the role of trust, image and religiosity in TAM, and to provide policy recommendation for the authorized organizations in Indonesia regarding several crucial factors that need to be considered so that Indonesian Muslims are willing to use Fintech for philanthropic purposes.

Design/methodology/approach

Online surveys were conducted to collect the data, of which 425 respondents have completed and returned the questionnaire. Multiple linear regression model and multi-variate analysis of variance are applied to test the statistical hypotheses.

Findings

This study supports the theory of reasoned action and the TAM. In which, the relationship between perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness with TAM is determined by trust and religiosity.

Research limitations/implications

It is worth to note the limitation of this study lies in the sampling technique and data collection. Indonesia is a fast archipelago country and consists of 34 provinces, but not all of the provinces are represented in the sample. The selected respondent heavily depends on the previous respondent’s willingness to share the questionnaire. So that the number of respondents does not proportionate to region or province.

Originality/value

This study offers an extended model of TAM that has never been done before, namely, by exploring the role of trust, religiosity and image, in the context of Islamic philanthropy.
