Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to see the effects of Information Communication Technology (ICT) on a firm's innovation performance in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The objective of this study is twofold: First, it aims to analyze the impact of ICT applications on firms' innovative behavior and whether firms using ICT applications more intensively are also more innovative. Second, and more essentially, it assesses empirically the impact of ICT applications on firms' innovative performance in sub-Saharan African countries by using instrumental variable probit model. Therefore, we used data from the 2013 enterprise survey (Business Environment and Enterprise Performance Survey (BEEPS)). According to our results, the most important ICT tools are emails and using the internet for online sales. Firms who have IT Teams are not creating any difference; however, if a firm purchase or develop in-house any software then they are more likely to produce innovation than the other firms.

Abstract

The time is right for a theory on strategic entrepreneurial ecosystems and business model innovation. Both topics have increased substantially during the past couple of years due to their strategic nature. This means they are uniquely placed to provide practical advice but also theoretical development. This chapter discusses the theory in terms of how it bridges strategic planning, innovation management, and entrepreneurship literature. Thereby propelling the field of entrepreneurial ecosystems further by suggesting it has both a strategic and business model perspective. This chapter argues the reasons for a new theory to be developed in order to maintain the relevance and practicality of the entrepreneurial ecosystem literature.

Abstract

Purpose

It is important to know the friction coefficient and wear loss for determination of tribological conditions at journal bearings. Tribological events that influence wear and its variations affect experimental results. The purpose of this paper is to determine friction coefficient and wear loss at CuSn10 alloy radial bearings by a new approach. In experiments, effects of bearings have been examined at dry and lubricated conditions and at different loads and velocities.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, friction coefficient and wear losses of journal and bearing have been determined by a new approach with a radial journal bearing test rig and artificial neural networks (ANNs) method. The ANN typifies a learning technique that enables the hidden input‐output relationship to be mapped accurately. Bronze‐based materials have been used as bearing material. Effects of friction coefficient and wear losses have been examined at same load and velocity and at dry and lubricated conditions.

Findings

The results obtained in ANN application are close to friction test results for dry and lubricated conditions. Therefore, by using trained ANN values, the intermediate results that were not obtained in the tests can be calculated. Experimental studies will be increased and research with ANN will be continued.

Originality/value

By using trained ANN values, the intermediate results that were not obtained in the tests can be calculated. The training finished on 30 min whereas experimental study had continued day after day.

Abstract

Although the design studio has formally been the locus for design education, informal education approach has gained more and more acceptance in the world. Informal education, which is the education outside the confines of curricula, includes the acquisition of knowledge and skills through experience, reading, social contact, etc. Workshops cover the essential weight of this informal education. Although the role of the design workshops in architectural design education has been very limited through overall design education’s past, many schools of architecture have taken steps to consider workshops as the part of informal learning and education.

“Culture and Space in the Build environment” (CSBE) Network of IAPS have been organizing “culture and design workshop series” for graduate and post graduate students in Turkey since 2001. In these workshops, a design teaching approach based on the conceptual framework of culture and space interactions is applied. The conceptual framework developed for the architectural design education, takes three fundamental starting points for workshops as the part of informal design education: as a tool for informal design education (method), as a tool for learning & understanding culture-environment relations (content), and as a tool for awareness of different environments/contexts (scale/place). The foundation of the conceptual framework is based on the general approach that discusses the “architectural design process” with regards to environmental context and content.

Within this context the aim of the paper is to discuss and evaluate the importance and the contribution of workshops as tool for informal architectural design education. These discussions will be held on the case of IAPS-CBSE Network’s last workshop “Istanbul as a Palimpsest City and Imperfection”. In the paper, the process, the method, the content and the results of workshop studies will be discussed and evaluated.
