Abstract

The majority of children receiving special education services in the United States are participating in the general education curriculum. Special education programming is closely regulated, creating environments where school districts must consider compliance issues, often neglecting the instructional needs of individual students. The Exceptional Children team in a large urban district in a Southeastern state created a “playbook” to support teachers and families in navigating and succeeding in a distance learning environment (District, 2020). This playbook will be useful for educators and families to ensure each and every child receives the assistance they need to be successful learners throughout their schooling.

Abstract

You can buy and use a personal computer without understanding the language—but it's a little hard to read these articles, and a lot harder to understand the Held thoroughly. The author starts a new sequence of Trailing Edge articles by denning some of the terms used in the articles and in the field and mentioning some of the other terms you'll see used but rarely defined. The author also provides notes from PC literature for July‐September 1992. For a year in which prices were supposed to stabilize, it's been a remarkable summer: the new general‐purpose machine is supposed to be a 50MHz 486DX2, a well‐equipped 486SX now goes for less than $2,000 complete, and even the hottest new machines are coming out at reasonable prices.

Abstract

A curious and unexpected thing has happened to personal computing typography: it's gotten cheaper and much more interesting, thanks to TrueType, a new digital typography standard that nobody (including the author) took seriously when it was first proposed. The author evaluates eight TrueType type collections costing from 10 cents to $1.25 per typeface. This article discusses that evaluation, and also evaluates a $19 CD‐ROM with more than 400 typefaces. The results may surprise you. They certainly surprised the author, when a company perhaps best known for selling cheap software in Canadian convenience stores proved to have not only the cheapest (per typeface) but also the best all‐around inexpensive typeface collection. The author also provides notes on the literature for April‐June 1993, including the last issues of PC Sources.

Abstract

Arriving at the end of a three‐year “semester,” it's exam time at the trailing edge. Didn't the author mention that there would be a test? Sixty‐six “true or false” statements test your knowledge and understanding of the personal computer field at the beginning of 1992, and the extent to which your view of personal computing is congruent with the author's. The latter is significant because, if most of you see things entirely different, then Library Hi Tech is wasting its paper printing this column and the author is wasting his time writing it. Some of the material on this quiz comes from the last eleven Trailing Edge columns. Some does not. The quiz, and the commentary accompanying answers, are the author's way of summing up three years of personal computing before moving on to another cycle. The author also provides notes from PC literature received during October‐December 1991. It's “printer quarter,” otherwise covering a wide range of topics. As usual, all the year‐end “awards” and predictions are ignored.

Abstract

A brief account of the history of the catalogue in the House of Lords Library is given, followed by a description of progress on catalogue automation 1978–90. An outline of the decision to acquire a multi‐user integrated online library system is provided with an account of the method of selection. The specification and functions of the Geac ADVANCE system, as used in the House of Lords Library, are described in detail, covering the modules for cataloguing, OPAC, acquisitions and serials control.

Abstract

The use of campuses as living, learning labs for sustainability education, and the advancement of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) is a growing trend at post-secondary institutions across North America. Post-secondary institutions are embracing this approach to advance sustainability and the SDGs both on- and off-campus and to cultivate the next generation of sustainability leaders. Recognizing the diverse stages of living lab program maturation between campuses, and the fact that living lab practitioners are often working in isolation, the Campus as Lab Community of Practice (CaL CoP) was created to enable peer-to-peer learning and to catalyze the development and potential of living lab programs toward meeting the SDGs in a coordinated fashion. The CaL CoP members have identified the opportunity to use a collective approach to advance the SDGs on their home campuses. A collective approach enables CaL CoP members to account for their contributions to advancing the SDGs in a way that is relevant to their local context while highlighting the global impact of their actions. Challenges to utilizing this approach include collaborating remotely, resourcing, and maintaining momentum.

Abstract

In this paper the research on gender and Full-Range Leadership is documented and explored. Included is consideration of research that studied Full-Range Leadership directly as well as indirect study that contributed to the field of research on Full-Range Leadership. The paper culminates in a series of recommendations for future research. It is hoped that these will help to move the field from documenting the differences or similarities of leadership (or perceptions of leadership) between women and men, to studying why these differences might exist. Additional recommendations are included that will help transport the value of this research from the pages of scholarly journals into organizations, communities, and the workplace.
