Abstract

Purpose

The buildings should be designed by respecting the environmental and climatic conditions they are in and their orientation. Then, the characteristics of the building envelope (BE) play an important role in building energy consumption and user comfort. In fact, the type and material of glazing is one of the crucial parameters for BE. The transparency ratio of BE also determines the façade performance. The aim of this study is to analyze the different renovation scenarios for BE with high transparency of an educational building (EB) in hot summer weather to obtain indoor thermal comfort (ITC) for users.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology includes thorough measurement of existing ITC using TESTO-440 and simulation of each retrofit scenario using DesignBuilder building energy modeling (BEM) simulation software with Energyplus to determine optimal thermal comfort. Since the study focuses on the impact of the transparent BE on summer ITC, four main scenarios, naturally ventilated (NV) façade, film-coated glass façade, replacement of glazing with opaque units, sun-controlled façade with overhang and solar shading, were simulated. The results were analyzed comparatively on both performance and cost to find the best renovation solutions.

Findings

A total of 7 different renovation scenarios were tested. Simulation results show that passive systems such as NV have limited contribution to indoor air temperature (IAT) improvement, achieving only a 4 °C reduction while offering the lowest cost. A film coating resulted in a reduction of 3–6 °C, but these applications have the highest cost and least impact on ITC. It was found that exterior coating leads to better results in film coating. Preventing and limiting the increase in IAT was achieved by reducing the transparency ratio of BE. The best results were obtained in these scenarios, and it was possible to reduce IAT by more than 10 °C. The best performance/cost value were also obtained by decreasing transparency ratio of roof and sun control.

Research limitations/implications

Since the high transparency ratio has a negative impact on summer comfort, especially in hot climate zones, summer ITC was prioritized in the renovation solutions for the case building.

Originality/value

The study’s findings present a range of solutions for improving the ITC of highly transparent buildings. The solutions can help building managers see the differences in renovation costs and their impacts on ITC to decrease the cooling load of the existing buildings.

Abstract

Purpose

Many parameters influence the success of sustainable projects (SPs) in the architecture–engineering–construction. One of these important parameters is the project delivery attributes (PDA), which are influenced by the project delivery system (PDS) while affecting the selection of it. This study aims to evaluate the significance of PDAs in influencing both the performance and success of SPs in Turkey, where the interest in SPs is high.

Design/methodology/approach

The impact of PDAs was determined by applying the two-round Delphi method with a semistructured interview involving the main stakeholders of a construction project, like owners, designers, contractors and consultants who played active roles in SPs, as well as academics to theoretically evaluate the issue. The significance of PDAs was assessed using the relative importance index, and the results were validated using the interrater agreement analysis.

Findings

The study identified key PDAs impacting SPs as owner character, commitment and motivation; simulation and energy modelling; and timing of stakeholders/early involvement.

Originality/value

The investigation of the significance of the PDAs is a lesser-studied context. Therefore, a research framework that enables an effective set of methods for solving the sectoral problems of PDAs that have impacts on SPs has been proposed. The framework is expected to open new opportunities for the generation and regulation of the PDSs for SPs. The findings will provide valuable insights to project stakeholders, particularly owners, local authorities and policymakers to assess which PDAs have a greater impact on sustainability performance when setting PDSs in SPs in other developing countries.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to evaluate the use of open and green spaces (OGS) of a historical building after the adaptive reuse of the building. The relationship between the use of OGSs and the perceived environments of the users is examined.

Design/methodology/approach

To determine the OGS use preferences of the users and to obtain quantitative data, a survey was conducted. The data were evaluated using descriptive statistics in SPSS. Also, observation method was used to determine the frequency measurements of OGS. Thus, the relationships between the results were identified statistically.

Findings

It has been determined that the outdoor space features of a historical building should be arranged following its new function. The use of OGSs was affected by the physical properties of the spaces, accessibility and time spent in the settlement.

Originality/value

The historical building itself and its interior spaces, as well as the open, semi-open and green spaces of the building, are affected by the adaptive reuse process. However, the fact that only a few studies in the literature focus on the outdoor environment of the re-functionalized historical buildings makes this study original and unique.

Abstract

Innovation means innovation. It enables companies to grow and compete with other companies. However, innovation studies also increase the welfare level of the countries. One of the most important topics in innovation studies is research and development (R&D). R&D enables companies to identify their current problems and lay the groundwork for new products and services. In this way, it contributes to the profit of the companies. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of innovation on the share value of the company. In the study, the data are collected from Turkey during the period 1991–2019. However, the study was tested by Engle–Granger Cointegration analysis. As a result, it has been determined that there is a long-term relationship between R&D expenditures and the company’s share value. In this context, companies need to focus on R&D expenditures to increase their share values. For this issue, they need to increase their liquidity. In addition, the R&D departments in the company need to be increased. Companies need to prepare a separate budget for R&D studies.

Abstract

Today, the demand for renewable energy investments is increasing due to the increase in the world population and the rapid depletion of resources. Renewable energy investments are seen as an area that requires more technical knowledge and experience than nonrenewable energy investments. For this reason, qualified workforce is important in this field. The aim of our study is to reveal the criteria by which renewable energy investments are effective on qualified labor supply. According to the results of our study, in which the analytic hierarchy process method was used, the criterion with the highest weight was determined as “harmonizing universities with undergraduate and graduate level education and internship opportunities.” When this criterion is taken into account, the implementation of policies toward university education in this field together with the renewable energy investments of the countries will positively affect the qualified labor supply.

Abstract

Carbon emission is one of the most important problems of today. In this framework, it is important for countries to take the necessary actions to solve this problem. Energy use is one of the most important causes of carbon emissions. Choosing fossil fuels in this process increases the carbon emission problem. Therefore, it is understood that countries should be more sensitive about energy types. In this context, renewable energy (RE) sources are recommended by experts. However, due to some problems of these energy types, it does not seem possible to meet all energy needs from these sources. It is thought that nuclear energy will produce a permanent solution to the carbon emission problem. In this context, it is recommended that the use of nuclear energy be put on the agenda by countries.

Abstract

The current challenges experienced by all nations promote the trade-off between the increase in economic performance and the protected environment. The investigation based on the energy economy has become an irreplaceable topic to determine the correct path for minimizing the trade-off cost. Within this scope, this study has been performed to investigate the causality nexus between the exports indicators (aggregated exports and the ICT exports) and the energy consumption (renewable and nonrenewable energy consumption of the selected five emerging countries. The Dumitrescu–Hurlin panel causality analysis is performed on the annual data between 2000 and 2014. As a consequence of the evidence, it is documented that there are various causality relationships between the exports and the energy consumption indicators in the light of the performed analysis at different lags. However, the role of nonrenewable energy consumption is more active in the economies of the considered countries. According to the evidence, it is recommended for the emerging countries to invest and allocate more funds to renewable energy resources to diminish the role of nonrenewable energy resources in the economy.

Abstract

Carbon emission is one of the most important issues threatening the existence of the world. Mostly carbon emission induced climate change disrupts human and nature balance. Carbon emission occurs as a result of practices that are dependent on human activities or not. One of the actors causing carbon emissions is production companies. The companies are working toward reducing carbon emissions. However, although these efforts reduce carbon emissions in the short term, carbon emissions continue in the long term. Therefore, the present study aims to determine the importance of carbon emission in terms of sustainable economic development. Depending on this purpose, production companies in Chile were included in the scope of research for 1990–2019. Based on these data, the study has been tested by Toda Yamamoto causality analysis. Result shows that carbon emissions are not the primary cause of sustainable economic development. In this context, governments need to focus on other issues that have a stronger causal relationship with sustainable economic development. However, studies should be conducted to determine the importance of other activities of companies for sustainable economic development. Hereby, the amount of carbon emission will be reduced and deficiencies in factors affecting sustainable economic development will be identified.

Abstract

The different methods were used to measure the impact of financial development on economic growth. This is largely due to a certain set of factors that have the influence of their relationship. First of all, based on the research results, several groups of factors are identified that determine the nonlinear interaction of the financial sector and economic growth. This is characterized by the fact that at different values of these indicators, financial development has an ambiguous impact on economic growth. There are several such groups in total. The first ones are usually institutional factors, indicators that characterize the legal system and the level of development of social institutions. In the absence of a sufficient level of legal framework, financial markets will be unstable, which will undermine the demand for financial sector services. Countries with a high level of development of legal institutions have a guarantee for economic entities in the stable development of economic relations.
