Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to manage knowledge pertaining to micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) actors in the business, agriculture and industry sectors. This study uses text mining techniques, specifically Latent Dirichlet Allocation Mallet, to analyze the data obtained from the in-depth interviews. This analysis helps us identify and understand the issues faced by these actors.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the authors use big data and business analytics to recalculate the MSME business vulnerability index in 503 districts and 34 provinces across Indonesia. Subsequently, the authors conduct in-depth interviews with MSME actors in Medan, Central Java, Yogyakarta, Bali and Manokwari, West Papua. Through these interviews, the authors explore their strategies for surviving the COVID-19 pandemic and the extent of their digital literacy, and the application of technology to maximize sales and business outcomes.

Findings

The findings reveal that, for the sustainable growth of MSMEs during and after the pandemic, collaboration across the Penta-Helix framework is essential. This collaboration enables the development of practical solutions for the challenges posed by COVID-19, particularly in the context of the “new normal.” In addition, the authors’ survey of MSMEs involved in agriculture, trade and processing sectors demonstrates that 58.33% experienced a decrease in income during the pandemic and 12.66% reported an increase in revenue. In contrast, 25% experienced no change in income before and during the pandemic.

Originality/value

This research contributes significantly by offering comprehensive insights obtained from in-depth surveys conducted with MSMEs across multiple sectors. The findings underscore the importance of addressing the challenges MSMEs face and highlight the need for collaboration within the Penta-Helix framework to foster their resilience and success amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to empirically investigate the determinants and consequences of psychological reactance in the online shopping context. Leveraging the psychological reactance and self-congruity theories, functional and symbolic discrepancies enhance the psychological reactance toward online shopping. In addition, trustworthiness moderates the impact of online customers attitude ambivalence on their psychological reactance.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors conduct an empirical study on online customer cognitive factors. In this research paper, the postpositivism research view is used. The Smart PLS-SEM is used to analyze the data.

Findings

The current study findings reveal that self-concept and operational incongruence (i.e. symbolic and functional) are the main factors that lead to psychological reactance and resulting in online shopping hate. Poor website quality and other matters are so significant they create functional incongruence. Moreover, low trustworthiness strengthens psychological reactance in the online shopping hate context.

Originality/value

This study extends the psychological reactance and self-congruence theories to online shopping. Previously, literature has extensively studied the social commerce intention.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to compare the impact of lean six sigma (LSS) implementation carried out in a pharmaceutical unit on the profitability of outpatient and inpatient care before and during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Design/method/approach

The data were analyzed descriptively to see the development patterns in four periods: before implementation, during the implementation before the pandemic, during the pandemic and during the enforcement of new normal, in general, and by the length of stay (LOS).

Findings

The inventory purchase in the pharmaceutical unit dramatically decreased after implementation even during the pandemic and new normal wherein the pre-pandemic it decreased by 27%, during the pandemic 29% and in the new normal 37% compared to pre-LSS. The hospital deficit decreased after implementation before the pandemic by 26% and during the pandemic by 10% from the pre-LSS time. However, during the new normal, the deficit increased by 29%, indicating a diminished effect of LSS on the hospital profits.

Research limitations/implications

This research raised the possible implication that the implementation of LSS needed to be carried out in the entire hospital to have a large effect, especially on the inpatient care and long-term care installations.

Originality/value

This research provided empirical evidence regarding the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on the ability of LSS at the unit level to provide efficiency at the unit level and the entire hospital at various levels of LOS.
