Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on the literature on victim precipitation theory, workplace ostracism (WO) and paranoia, this paper examines the mediating role of WO on the paranoia–service performance (SP) relationship. This paper further postulates that team cognitive diversity (TCD) moderates the paranoia–WO relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 228 nurses from a leading hospital located in an eastern province of China. Hypotheses developed from the literature were tested using multivariate hierarchical linear modeling (HLM).

Findings

WO had a negative effect on SP, while TCD had a positive effect on WO. Cognitive diversity moderated the paranoia–WO relationship, such that the positive relationship was stronger when group diversity was high.

Originality/value

This paper develops and tests a model exploring the antecedents of WO and its effect on SP.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims both to develop and validate a measure for inclusive leadership and to test some its potential consequences by examining the relationship between inclusive leadership and different dimensions of work performance (proficiency, adaptivity, and proactivity) through the mediating role of the perceptions of inclusion.

Design/methodology/approach

We use data generated from an expert panel (n = 20) and two surveys (n = 235; n = 333) to generate items and establish convergent and discriminant validity. Data were gathered from 363 faculty to examine inclusive leadership's consequences.

Findings

The results empirically support Randel et al.’s conceptualization of inclusive leadership and evidence the psychometric properties of the study's scale. The results also empirically support the proposed relationships between inclusive leadership and various work-performance dimensions.

Originality/value

We develop and validate a more comprehensive measure of inclusive leadership and test some of its potential consequences.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to adapt the job demands–resources perspective to extend social network literature by examining the effectiveness of psychological (work engagement and emotional exhaustion) and instrumental (access to benefits) mechanisms as mediators of the relationship between employees’ centrality in positive and negative ties networks and job performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The survey data were collected from 103 employees working at a public bank in three stages.

Findings

The study results supported the hypotheses that an individual’s centrality in a negative network increases his/her experience of emotional exhaustion, while individual centrality in a positive network increases his/her work engagement. In addition, the findings showed that centrality in positive networks will be more predictive of work engagement when negative ties centrality increases, and the relationship between centrality in the negative network and emotional exhaustion is weaker when centrality in the positive network is higher.

Originality/value

The study extends out to the social ledger model (Labianca and Brass, 2006) by examining the dual pathways of effects of positive and negative ties in predicting employee outcomes. In addition, the authors’ model enriches the understanding of the nature of social network ties more broadly by suggesting that its effects in the workplace can extend beyond psychological effects to include instrumental impact.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop a theoretical integrated model examining the role of the co-occurrence of task and relationship conflict (CTRC) as a mediator in the relationship between diversity and group effectiveness. The model also examines transformational leadership (TFL) as a moderator in this relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected using a questionnaire survey from 354 faculty in 56 workgroups from three private universities in the Middle East. SEM and hierarchical regression analysis were used to test the suitability of the model and its hypotheses.

Findings

The results revealed that TFL moderated diversity's direct effect on CTRC as well as the indirect effect linking diversity, CTRC, and group effectiveness. Specifically, diversity had an inverted U-shaped relationship with CTRC in groups with low TFL, but a negative linear relationship in those with high TFL.

Originality/value

The findings expand understanding of how, and under what conditions, diversity influences group effectiveness by: offering a fresh treatment of this relationship, introducing CTRC as a bivariate construct and bringing into focus the centrality of its harmful effect on this association, and highlighting the influence of TFL in ameliorating this harmful effect.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to extend the ostracism literature by exploring the pragmatic impact of ostracism on performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Ostracism workplace, social relations and empowerment structures are discussed. The paper then develops a theoretical framework that explains why and under what conditions workplace ostracism undermines employees’ performance. The author proposes that empowerment structures mediate the link between ostracism and in-role and extra-role performance. In addition, it was proposed that relational links buffer the negative relationship between ostracism and empowerment structures on performance and weaken the negative indirect effect of ostracism on performance.

Findings

The theoretical arguments provide support for the model showing that empowerment structures mediate the relationship between ostracism and performance, and the mediation effect only occurred when external links were high but not when external links were low.

Originality/value

The author has expanded the extant literature by answering recent calls for research exploring the pragmatic impact of workplace ostracism where past research has typically focused solely on the psychological impacts such as psychological needs.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the influential factors driving customer-oriented constructive deviance (COCD) within the context of the tourism and hospitality industry. Specifically, the authors explore the role of moral emotions as mediators and moral disengagement as a moderator.

Design/methodology/approach

In Study 1, the participant pool consisted of 259 frontline service employees hailing from a diverse selection of 54 four- and five-star hotels. Study 2 took an alternative approach, using a scenario-based experiment with 212 participants.

Findings

The results reported that organizational injustice toward customers is positively related to other-condemning emotions and leads to COCD. The results also reported that perceived customer citizenship behavior (CCB) positively relates to other-praising emotions, resulting in constructive deviance from customer-oriented. Moreover, these findings support moral emotions and moral disengagement interactions.

Originality/value

This paper shows that an organization’s injustice of external parties, such as customers, may provide important information that employees use to shape their moral emotions (e.g. other condemning emotions) and behavior toward the organization (e.g. COCD). Furthermore, this study confirms that perceived customer citizenship behavior contributes to COCD through other-praising emotions.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of two types of negative ties, namely perceived negative ties and intended negative ties, on the two types of employee work outcomes, namely job performance and ethical voice. In addition, the chapter discusses the role of personal reputation as a mediator in explaining the relationship between negative ties and work outcomes. The study sample comprised of 103 blue-collar workers and their direct supervisors in a large cement factory in southern Iraq. The study used survey method as a mean to collect the data. Data analysis showed that perceived negative ties and intended negative ties influence participants’ job performance and ethical voice. The result also indicates that personal reputation mediates the relationship between negative ties and work outcomes. In light of the results, theoretical and practical implications are presented.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationships among perceived external prestige (PEP), perceived internal respect (PIR), organizational and work-group identification (OID and WID), and counterproductive work behavior (CWB).

Design/methodology/approach

Data were gathered from a cement firm's employees, using longitudinal research. Descriptive statistics, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling were employed.

Findings

PEP and top management respect were positively related to organizational identification (OID), and the latter negatively related to organizational deviance; perceived co-workers and supervisor respect was positively related to WID, and the latter negatively related to interpersonal deviance; and identification foci mediated the relationship between status judgments and CWB.

Research limitations/implications

The sample was based on one organization, limiting the results’ generalizability, and interactive relationships between WID and OID were not considered. The findings’ implications suggest that organizations need specific strategies for reducing deviant organizational behavior and deviant interpersonal behavior, and for fostering identification of their members.

Originality/value

The study shows that employees’ evaluations of prestige and respect are important predictors of their identification with their organization and work group. It is the first study to investigate the relationship between social identification foci and deviant work behaviors as a negative outcome of identification. It developed a new scale to assess employees’ perception of internal respect; it supports operationalizing PIR as a multifoci construct. It has also answered the call for longitudinal research as opposed to cross-sectional research.
