Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of ESG practices on green innovation with the moderating effect of innovation orientation in Malaysian manufacturing listed companies.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employed a quantitative research approach by using a well-structured questionnaire for data collection. The questionnaire was distributed to 204 Malaysian manufacturing listed companies in consumer products and services sector. Finally, partial least square-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was utilized to examine the relationship between constructs.

Findings

Based on stakeholder theory, results indicated that environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices significantly improve green innovation. The insignificant moderating effect of innovation orientation was identified between the relationship of environmental and social practices and green innovation. Interestingly, results affirmed the negative moderating effect between the relationship of governance practices and green innovation.

Research limitations/implications

This study is limited to Malaysian manufacturing companies of consumer products and services sector in Bursa Malaysia. Hence, the findings of this study cannot be generalized to manufacturing companies of other geographical contexts.

Practical implications

This work provides constructive implications to management and policymakers of Malaysian manufacturing companies in strategic planning toward enhancing green innovation and developing business competitiveness to achieve sustainable business performance.

Originality/value

This research magnifies valuable insights into the literature through a comprehensive model that simultaneously investigates the relationships between ESG practices, innovation orientation and green innovation. In addition, this is the first attempt to investigate the influence of ESG practices on green innovation with a moderating effect of innovation orientation, which indeed strengthens the originality of this study.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to propose a conceptual framework to examine the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and green organizational culture (GOC) on green innovation with the moderating role of environmental, social and governance (ESG) disclosure in the Malaysian manufacturing industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is based on primary data to be collected from 204 manufacturing enterprises of consumers, products and services sector through a questionnaire that incorporates the five-point Likert scale. The exploratory factor analysis is proposed to be performed using SPSS 24.0 and confirmatory factor analysis is suggested to be conducted using AMOS.21 software to explore the factors and reliability of the items and to confirm the factorial structure of pertinent variables, respectively. Furthermore, partial least square structural equation modeling is proposed to investigate relationships between constructs and latent variables.

Findings

The proposed framework suggests that the comprehensive adoption of CSR and GOC with the moderating role of ESG disclosure has a significant and positive impact on green innovation.

Practical implications

This study provides insights into formulating strategies for enhancing green innovation and serves as a valuable resource for stakeholders for sustainable development in manufacturing enterprises.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, regarding originality, this is the first attempt at conceptualizing the integrated framework of CSR, GOC, green innovation and ESG disclosure for collective examination that is likely to extend the existing literature. Furthermore, this study extends stakeholders and resource-based view theory by proving their utility in the perspective of CSR, GOC, green innovation and ESG disclosure to achieve environmental sustainability.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the key factors that hinder technopreneur’s success.

Design/methodology/approach

The finalization of the most appropriate method to conduct any study is based on the nature of the research questions (Shaw, 1999; Morse and Richards, 2002). As this study is exploratory, a qualitative approach was used to collect the data. Morse and Richards (2002) have emphasized that the qualitative technique to collect is useful for in-depth assessment of the participant’s experiences, their understanding regarding the matter and their interpretation of their experiences.

Findings

Technopreneurs face four significant problems that have an impact on their business agility and competitiveness. These four factors are as follows: the entrepreneur’s skills and preparedness; their organization’s insufficient capabilities and talent to deal with the challenges; a lack of support mechanisms from relevant institutions; and, finally, the rapidly changing business environment in terms of technology and competition.

Originality/value

This study explores the hindrance factors through qualitative techniques faced by young technopreneurs in the context of Malaysia. This study will provide deep insight regarding the key issues facing new startups and will be helpful for policymakers.

Abstract

Purpose

The disruptive pandemic has badly affected supply chain operations across the globe and implementing green supply chain strategies is challenging for manufacturing firms, especially in emerging countries. Therefore, this study aims to identify the significant challenges hindering the green supply chain as a pathway towards sustainability in the post-COVID-19 era.

Design/methodology/approach

Fuzzy Delphi Methodology (FDM), Interpretive structural modeling (ISM) and MICMAC were applied. FDM was applied to select the most relevant challenges and later ISM and Matrices d'Impacts cross-multiplication appliqúe a classmate MICMAC were used for modeling and classifying critical challenges.

Findings

Lack of trust between firms and supply chain partners, and difficulty in transforming positive environmental attitudes into action are the significant challenges to implementing green supply chain management. Lack of communication between government and Chinese firms is the least important factor which shows that the government is trying to support firms and reduce the negative effects after the drastic impacts of COVID-19. However, COVID-19 left a draconian effect on organization’s green supply chain and it’s not easy to overcome.

Originality/value

None of the previous studies applied mixed methodologies of FDM, ISM and MICMAC to evaluate Green supply chain as a pathway to sustainable operations in the post-COVID-19 era. Challenging factors of green supply chain operations in COVID-19 are different from earlier studies and contribute to the literature of emerging countries.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the squeezing flow of hybrid nanofluid within the two parallel disks. The 50:50% water–ethylene glycol mixture is used as a base fluid to prepare Ag–Fe_3O_4 hybrid nanofluid. Entropy generation analysis is examined by using the second law of thermodynamics, and Darcy’s modal involves estimating the behavior of a porous medium. The influences of Viscous dissipation, Joule heating and thermal radiation in modeling are further exerted into concern.

Design/methodology/approach

For converting partial differential systems to ordinary systems, a transformation technique is used. For the validation part, the numerical solution is computed by embracing a fourth-order exactness program (bvp4c) and compared with the analytical solution added by the homotopy analysis method (HAM). Graphical decisions expose the values of miscellaneous-arising parameters on the velocity, temperature and local-Nusselt numbers.

Findings

Hybrid nanofluid gives significant enhancement in the rate of heat transfer compared with nanofluid. The outcomes indicate that the average Nusselt number and entropy generation are increasing functions of the magnetic field, porosity and Brinkman number. When the thermal radiation rises, the average Nusselt number diminishes and the entropy generation advances. Furthermore, combining silver and magnetite nanoparticles into the water–ethylene glycol base fluid significantly enhances entropy generation performance.

Originality/value

Entropy generation analysis of the magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) fluid squeezed between two parallel disks by considering Joule heating, viscous dissipation and thermal radiation for different nanoparticles is addressed. Furthermore, an appropriate agreement is obtained in comparing the numerical results with previously published and analytical results.

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to study the impacts of exponential space-dependent heat source (ESHS) and thermal radiation in Marangoni convective flow of Cross fluid. The passively controlled model is developed to exhibit the nanoparticles’ concentration on the surface.

Design/methodology/approach

The resulting problem under consideration is tackled by using the shooting approach.

Findings

Temperature field augments with enhancement of the thermophoretic, exponential-based space heat source (ESHS) and radiation parameters, whereas it decays with the increase of the Marangoni ratio parameter.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no such analysis has yet been reported.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to clarify the effect of compressive stress on cavitation-erosion corrosion behavior of 304 stainless steel.

Design/methodology/approach

Compressive stresses of 60 MPa and 120 MPa were applied to 304 stainless steel through a self-designed loading device, and cavitation erosion-corrosion tests were performed using an ultrasonically vibratory apparatus. Scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction were used to analyze the microstructure evolution, and corrosion behavior was studied by electrochemical analysis.

Findings

The cavitation weight loss of 304 stainless steel decreased with the compressive stress. After cavitation corroded for 8 h, the weight loss for the specimen with 120 MPa compressive stress was 5.11 mg/cm2, which was reduced by 56.7% from that of the specimen without loading stress (11.79 mg/cm2). The reason can be attributed to that compressive stress promoted the deformation-induced martensitic transformation during the cavitation process, which could not only provide a cushioning effect by absorbing cavitation impact energy but also improve the hardness of 304 stainless steel.

Originality/value

Compressive stress was found to restrain the cavitation damage on 304 stainless steel, and the corresponding mechanism was proposed.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to use a qualitative approach to explore and clarify the mechanism by which heuristic-driven biases influence the decisions and performance of individual investors actively trading on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX). It also aims to identify how to overcome the negative effect of heuristic-driven biases, so that finance practitioners can avoid the expensive errors which they cause.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopts an interpretative approach. Qualitative data was collected in semistructured interviews, in which the target population was asked open-ended questions. The sample consists of five brokers and/or investment strategists/advisors who maintain investors’ accounts or provide investment advice to investors on the PSX, who were selected on a convenient basis. The researchers analyzed the interview data thematically.

Findings

The results confirm that investors often use heuristics, causing several heuristic-driven biases when trading on the stock market, specifically, reliance on recognition-based heuristics, namely, alphabetical ordering of firm names, name memorability and name fluency, as well as cognitive heuristics, such as herding behavior, disposition effect, anchoring and adjustment, repetitiveness, overconfidence and availability biases. These lead investors to make suboptimal decisions relating to their investment management activities. Due to these heuristic-driven biases, investors trade excessively in the stock market, and their investment performance is adversely affected.

Originality/value

This study provides a practical framework to explore and clarify the mechanism by which heuristic-driven biases influence investment management activities. To the best of authors’ knowledge, the current study is the first to focus on links between heuristic-driven biases, investment decisions and performance using a qualitative approach. Furthermore, with the help of a qualitative approach, the investigators also highlight some factors causing an increased use of heuristic variables by investors and discuss practical approaches to overcoming the negative effects of heuristics factors, so that finance practitioners can avoid repeating the expensive errors which they cause, which also differentiates this study from others.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to assess the prevalence of burnout syndrome and its associated factors among medical students at Jazan University, Jazan, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Design/methodology/approach

A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 440 randomly selected medical students at Jazan University. The questionnaire used for this study was based on the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory.

Findings

The overall prevalence of burnout was estimated at 60.2% (95% CI 55.6–64.8). The prevalence was higher for females (64.1%) than for males (56.2%) but without statistically significant differences (p > 0.05). On average, the students scored the highest averages in the personal burnout category, followed by the study-related and client-related burnout categories. In the multivariate analysis, a lower age (beta = −3.17, p = 0.026), female (beta = −0.896, p = 0.016), and having better burnout knowledge (beta = 0.710, p = 0.025) predict significantly higher personal burnout.

Practical implications

It is necessary to implement strategies to reduce the incidence of burnout among medical students for the sake of a better quality of life for future doctors.

Originality/value

There is a high prevalence of burnout among Jazan’s medical students.

Abstract

Purpose

Prior researches on the adoption of mobile health services (MHS) concentrate on the subjective cognitive appraisals resulting in technology adoption, while ignoring how to shape those cognitive appraisals by the objective message design strategies which are easier to operate in practice. Based on protection motivation theory (PMT), the current research aims to explore the antecedents of cognitive appraisals by focusing on message design strategies of fear appeal and coping appeal.

Design/methodology/approach

A two-stage scenario-based survey of 204 participants was conducted to collect data. The authors chose SPSS and covariance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM) approach with the software LISREL 8.8 to test our model.

Findings

The results show that the relationship between fear appeal and fear arousal is inverted U-shaped such that the degree of fear arousal is the greatest when the fear appeal is at a moderate level. Perceived usefulness for the message with negative framing is higher than that with positive framing. Furthermore, fear appeal and coping appeal have a significant interaction on the adoption of MHS at different stages.

Research limitations/implications

The sample data of this study come from a special health service of a special group in China, which limits the universality of our research results for other groups or health care services. Therefore, future researchers can validate the model in other research scenarios and sample populations.

Originality/value

This study shows how fear appeal and coping appeal work together to influence individuals' adoption intention. The authors’ findings expand the theoretical depth of PMT and fear theory, enriching the theoretical connotation of framing effect in mobile health technology adoption context, which add new insights to design more persuasive messages through fear appeal and coping appeal for researchers and MHS providers in mobile health communication or propaganda.
